1200RT
I collected my new RT yesterday from Donford’s. I never expected such a change from the previous model. Ok the thing has all the gadgets and to the untrained eye, the wife, looks the same. But what a bike..!!
It was already 4:30 pm when I left Donford’s but I couldn’t resist taking it for a spin over the Franshoek Pass. The myriad of coloured vines quickly passed by as I hit the bends. The bike simply took each curve it its stride making a moderate rider, me, into a super rider. The thing leans like I have never experienced before, did I say lean...It LEANS. I was scared I might scrape the panniers so eased off the throttle. That’s another thing, the throttle response throughout the gears is fantastic.
The bike rides smooth and there is very little vibration though the bars. John forgot to turn off the heated seat, I couldn’t work out why my bum was so hot? I thought it might be the speed I was doing oops..! Soon I was over the pass and riding thru the valley with the dam on my right, what a sight.
Nothing beats a good ride on a great bike and the new RT is a GREAT BIKE..!!
May you have many safe and happy miles on that bike.
The previous model you are referring to? Also a 1200RT which has been around since 2005?
Cause I can't believe there can be such a difference between the pre facelift and the latest model, or am I wrong? If that is so, well miracles do happen.
My 1200RT (83000km) is just getting better and better...
We hope that we see you on our breakfast "TAR" rides in the near future - this Sunday maybe to give the RT a nice run-in. Happy and safe biking.
The 2010 spec is basically the same to the quick look but has several subtle changes.
The most notable is apparently handling and smoothlness of engine- I have the 2008 Rt and did not know it could get any smother.
But the handle bar controls are where the most noticaeble changes occur.
Vontrols have morphed into simple easy buttone all on the Left grip and the Very excellent hydrualic fluid reservoirs have regressed into silly plastic pots that WILL FALL OFF if you drop the bike.
Funnliy enough, in an effort to reduce the amount of buttons in the office the indicator activaters are not two buttons but a retro back to the 650GS- yes, a single button on LHS zigactly same as the 650.
The info or BC button has migrated to the left- a huge improvement. I hate the stupid postioin on the right - too far to reach with the thumb without losing throttle control.
Now it is conveniently sited for left thumb toggling.
The ESA and ASC controls have merged into one button.
All the buttons are smaller and look flimsier.
But they are well sited and easy to use and this will reduce workload in the office and improve productivity while riding
This means a safer ride.
Minor fairing mods and still a bike that seduces you very quickly.
i'm ot going near it.
I Fear it.
i knoiw if I straddle it, I'll not get off.
Well done Mr. Dunn
Congratulations Chris.
Andy forget the buttons you won't believe the difference in the handling. I had a 2008 RT, different bike..! Mind you, I prefer the real BMW indicators, I keep hitting the hooter every time I indicate left.
So its really better than my 2006 RT?
I also hate the on board computer button on the rhs, I end up operating it with my left hand. I like the sturdy brake fluid reservior. Plastic?
I will also not get too close to the new RT, as Andy said, I won't get off....
Wel, alles het 'n prys... It is a function of what one has to finance on the new one.
NO, forget it, I know what I've got with all its guarantee claims being history. With the new model I don't know what I'll get and what initial factory faults I'll end up getting.
Like the Dyno test I had done together with another 17 1200GS and GSA bikes in Somerset West the other day.
These 1200's run so lean (mine: 14,9 ave, the others slightly less lean) that they are btesting the limits of the melting point of aluminium. Something to do with EU regulations. See the thread on Wild Dogs. Huge international discussion, all with the aim of solving the problem, but BMW are dead quiet...
Enjoy the new RT and don't bring it near me!
Me and wife and all belongings overfilling boxes took 950 km ride in quite strong winds just after previous snow (very warmly dressed). I got average of just of 16.3km/l riding at 155-160km/h in the winds. Was very pleased - way less than a tank from Prince Albert to the Strand + some extra travelling. I liked this because toilet stops (1 on the trip) is much faster than toilet + petrol stops and prevent seeing all the familiar faces you've past again.
