Some guidelinies on ettiquette and safety.
In general:
- The motorbike must please stay clear of the peloton at all times and not interfere with the racing in any way
- No cyclist may be allowed to draft behind the motorbike
- The bike may not give any assistance to any cyclist
- watch out for the speed with which the cyclists go downhill, or around corners - speed up and rejoin the race on the other side rather
- Motorbikes must please stay clear of the cyclists on the Annandale road, leading up to the finish
- There are ThinkBike marshals en route as well, doing the marshalling. If they request the media bike to move on, please ask the biker to adhere to these requests.
Guys, gals any takers??
I cannot as I'm riding in the race myself on a cycle.
Any interest?
of the lady photographer - to help us make a decision.
Look, Julie has come down with flu and might not be able to run the 21k she was planning on Sunday. So I may be available and will be able to confirm for sure a bit later today or tomorrow. Plus it will be worth it to be able to see you suffer you old codger
Ha! I'm WAY ahead of you, Charles. I've already asked for a picture of her, and here it is.
I would have loved to do it but I just remembered that I have some gardening to attend to, and a pool to clean, fill in my tax returns - oh, and I have to balance my cheque book ... such a hassle when it falls behind, you know...
Nice one. Does your ex know you are making jokes with pictures of her?
Thanks to Charles Oertel who is now in contact with Ronel and will hold the BMW club reputation high as he rides the cycle race as chaufeur.
Thanks Charles.
Charles, Ronel says a big thanks and you rode well and she shot off excellent race picks.
Lucky you guys are alive after the close shave.
Apparently Charles with photographer leading the peleton went through an intersection in Stellenbosch just meters ahead of a car which shot the light and totaled the traffic police car that was the pace car.
It almost tumbled the entire cream of SA racing
The riding was great but really hard work. I had to ride very close to the bicycles to get good photos, and had to maintain speed and line at slow speeds up Hellshoogte pass with the photographer doing acrobatics on the pillion seat as she twisted around to get the right shots. Ronelle was a great pillion though - she was barely noticeable on the back, mounted and dismounted quickly and easily, and was comfortable in all situations.
One near miss was when we were boxed in by the bicycles on the RHS of the road, riding on the very verge of the road, and there were oncoming cars on the verge waiting for the peleton to pass. I was headed straight for the cars and could not move over because the bicycles were in the way. We passed them with millimetres to spare.
The accident was in the middle of Stellenbosch, and it would have been ugly if timing had been different. We were parallel to the police car racing ahead to block the intersection. Although the light was red for us, the marshalls and traffic police had stopped the traffic. A car shot past all the stopped traffic to the right of us and would have taken us out had the traffic police car not been on our RHS. Boom - two cars down, Charles and Ronelle shaken, not stirred.
Increasingly I am seeing more and more totally stupid drivers on the road - and I mean thick as pigshit.
Well done Charles ... agree ... also experiencing total idiots on the road ... must be the moon!
Well done to you and Ronel...I have raced bikes and have fallen hard...its not an easy task especially with the motorist on the roads today. You’ve only got to look at the front page of the Argus yesterday.
