Today, Sunday 23rd  October, we were all looking forward to a real corker of a pen-ultimate race for MotoGP in Sepang, Malaysia.

On lap 2, turn 11, Marco Simoncelli on his No: 58 Honda, drifted across the track, fell, got hit by Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi.

He was 4th at the time.

As he was hit by the two bikes, his helmet was ripped off and he lay inert on the track.

30 minutes after the red flag, the announcment came that he succumbed to his injuries.

This ended 2 seasons in the big league which  I must say saw his colorful character in quite a few incidences which brought him on front of the stewards.

a talented rider with lots still to offer.

A sad way to end a career and a black day for  MOTOGP.

I looked at this agian and

I looked at this agian and again and my heart goes out not just to his family but to poor VR and CE,

In the footage, VR contacts him just behind the helmut, and 'riding' the helmet off. VR's fairing was pulped in the process and it must have devastated him.

CE drove like a wedge between bike five eight and its rider.

Both VR and Ce were just passengers and could have done absolutley nothing to change the outcome.

MS had already slipped off his saddle and his bum was sliding on the tar. Had there being no bikes so close he would have crossed the track, separated from the bike, run after it, jumped opn and lost maybe 5 seconds.

It was an unfiortunate racing accident with absolutely nothing any track officals or other riders could have changed.

Any investigation can only show a terribly unfortunate event that shook the MOTOGP world.

No changes will prevent this freak incident in future.

What does need to be looked at with a critical eye is the fact that the race was said to be cancelled bacause of insufficient medical staff to man the ER and the track side response-.

Now thats a big NO NO!!!

Surely you have full ER staff in the ER extra and additional to the track event medics in the fast response vehicles.

Bad Form.

But in the event, moods were so black it was better to cancel than to restart the race.

I was on the Dunlop Bridge in 197footsak and watched Tom Price's accident and as a kid it was something I did not understand much, except how astounded I was to see Frikkie Vermeulen doing somersualts shedding his marshall clothes after being hit.

But watching AS 's crash in his Williams on May the 1st 1994 on lap 6 was just too shocking.

From the body language of the first-on-scene, it was clear the outcome was fatal and it was a real tragedy that has yet to be explained.

The 80 minute movie on AS is excellent- a must have for the DVD collection.
