Breakdown Services?

I have seen a few posts on breaking down, and the services to help repair, or tow the bike back home or to a service centre...

As  a new rider, with out the wealth of telephone numbers of who to call when the enevitable occurs, would it be possible for members to comment on who to contact if one breaks down half way to somewhere... or which orginisation to belong to that provides these services to motorcycle riders? (The AA, SwiftCare, OnCall etc)

Steve is used by BMW too.  Operates from Milnerton next to Duck 'n Dive and that other bike place with the odd Japanese Brand name Smile

Steve will also pick you up if you decide to have a few drinks and need to get home ... R200 I think ... cheaper than a fine and more comfortable than the free lodging supplied by the men with the blue lights.

Mr.Badger knows him

Occasionally Mr.Badger has been unable to get to Atlantic himself.  And once Brenda had the same problem.  Rather than towing the bike (which is illegal btw), I just save time and money by phoning Steve.  Used Steve 4 times now - always great service and value.

Steve

Another upvote for Steve - waited next to N2 near squatter camp with puncture one Sunday afternoon, gathering rain clouds and darkness descending. Waited about 45 minutes for BMW on-call to even get back to me with a time estimate (to be fair, I think this was during a period when they were busy switching to the AA and they hadn't sorted out recovery vehicles yet), called Steve and he was there in 20 minutes. He'd just returned from an overnight drive from Upington and still it was no trouble for him to come and fetch me straight away. He charged me a fair price for dropping me at my door, took my bike with him and dropped it, free of charge, at Atlantic in the morning! Now that's what I call service.

Subsequently, BMW did seem to sort out their recovery arrangement with the AA and I was picked up on another occasion in their snazzy new vehicle in short order. BMW On-Call will be your first port of call, but it's good to have options - for those times when price doesn't matter ;-)

On Call Costs

There are lots of comments on the forum about BMW On Call... I don't have this on my bike by default, so would have to pay... any idea on what we are talking about money wise here?
