CAPE TOWN BIKE FEST - CANCELLED
Bad news for those who had intended going to this event.
Unfortunately it has been cancelled.
Apparantly logistical problems and sponsors withdrawing were given as reasons.
(I was told about it and checked on Computicket where it is confirmed "This Performance has been Cancelled" in red).

That is alot of planning, time and effort down the drain.
It must still have cost someone a packet.
Pity.
It is a pity.
I wanted to go, but had not committed to it, becuase of the excessively high ticket prices.
Unfortunately we just do not have the critical mass in CT to host such an event without serious sponsorship.
The stadium is just too expensive to hire. What I do not understand is why the City does not just give WP Rugby the keys in a swop for the Newlands site. Central Gov paid the majority of the build costs and we paid the balance. I heard this morning that it has cost us some R 30 mill for upkeep since Sail pulled the plug on their deal (April I think). To carry on throwing money at it is a crime. Give it away and let WP Rugby make a go of it.
A pity as I would like to have gone, but when paying for 3 it become a tad expensive.
what i don't understand is how Sail could have pulled the plug on the deal in the first place?
Surely there was some sort of contract?
I heard from a reliable source that over 5 Million went into the advertising etc.............eina!

R200 for a whole day of bikes, concerts, beauty pageant, MOD and Brian Capper? Seems cheap to me.

Yeah, but take the wife and kid... and it gts expensive.
and as for the concerts... they're bands we've never heard of... there was no guarantee the stalls would be any good. They might just cater for superbikes or the MX crowd. Anything that was on sale there was likely to be expensive. (food and drinks included)
You couldn't take a helmet into the stadium, and there was no word if the organizers had made a provision for something like that.
Yes R200 may be okay if you spend the ENTIRE day there.... but if its a family outing thats highly unlikely.
All I know is I was keen to go... but non commital because of the pric, and whether or not it would be worth it.
Cape Town Bike Festival Cancelled - Tickets will be refunded
It is with great regret to announce that this year's Cape Town Bike Festival (CTBF) has been cancelled due to lack of both sponsorship & ticket support for the top level event. Two weeks ago the company was still hopeful we would be able sell enough tickets to make the event happen on advice that an event like the CTBF is a walk-in event and that significant ticket sales would only start happening closer to the event. However, although substantial communication saw ticket sales climbing on a daily basis, viability was not assured and although we have spent a considerable amount of money in trying to realise the Festival, we believe it would have been irresponsible to continue under the circumstances and in the end not able to pay vendors or refund people who bought tickets. "It has been a personal dream of mine to make the Cape Town Bike Festival something of substance and an exciting annual event and I apologise for the inconvenience the cancellation may have caused," says CTBF CEO De Wet Du Plessis All ticket holders will be refunded and those who bought tickets from Computicket can contact the vendor for refund while those who bought directly from Cape Town Bike Festival can contact the company (info@capetownbikefestival.com) in this regard.
I am saddened by the cancellation but not one bit surprised. I was extremely skeptical that the organisers/promoters thought that they would have the critical mass down here in the Fairest Cape.........more so in the very financially trying times we are experiencing.
A pity for all of us indeed.
De Wet Du Plessis being interviewed by John Maytham this afternoon on 567 Cape Talk
I missed it!!!!
Anybody hear what he had to say??
I heard the interview. The guy came across quite well. The sober assessment was that it was not financially viable and perhaps it was not a good idea to combine the biking and the other entertainment, coupled with high ticket prices.
He said that he has lost R5 million but will be able to repay all ticket holders and vendors who had bought space.
In the early eighty's a bike show was held at the Goodwood show grounds, it was well presented and attended. At the end of day it was break even.
Once I saw that the guys in G P were organising a bike show for November I thought "well that is the end of the C T show." A sad day indeed.
