Chris Dunn has come down outside Calitzdorp on the way to Die Hel, with Trevor and Graham.

Not sure of the exact circumstances but he has a leg fracture which required him to be air-lifted to George where he will probably have an operation to attach plates and pins today.

He is obviously in pain and disappointed that his holiday plans have gone out the window - our sympathy and well wishes Chris.  Hoping you are out of pain soon and have a speedy recovery.

and speedy recovery Chris.

I believe that the remaining two adventurers (Trevor and Graham) continued and arrived safely (albeit soaking wet after an altercation with a small river crossing) in Die Hel late yesterday evening.

Ride safe and keep the rubber side down guys!

Get Well Soon Chris

Sorry about your off - hope you get on the mend soon.

I have noticed a particular viciousness about the car drivers this weekend.  Is it the stress of the world economic meltdown, or just South African bevokdheid when it comes to driving?  Please be extra alert and careful this season.

Dont have all the details but

Dont have all the details but Chris is ok, in hospital and they are inserting a pin into the leg today. Spoke to Belinda and she says thanks for the concerns but is running around and will revert back to us as soon as the dust settles.

Seems like it was a fall from Chris and no other vehicles involved.

Just received this e mail

Just received this e mail from Belinda :

Thanks Geoff,  Will you put on the BMW forum that Chris had a pin inserted in right leg as well as plate on lower leg as the bone was rather fragmented but he has just gone in for his second post op x ray and he is recovering remarkably well.  Just so everyone knows and I don’t have to repeat it all a hundred times.

The benefits of having a satelight phone with you when shit happens, (and it does when you least expect it!!!) is that you can action help fast. It can mean the difference between life and death.

A BIG thanks to Pamela my sister for organising everything, from phoning the emergency services to the recovery of the bike.

Chris recieved the best treatment in the shortest possible time. The Metro Recue team were fast and efficient in the handling of the situation. The AMS(Air Mercy Rescue Service) were called out due to the severity of the break and when we looked again every thing was over. All DunnLaughing and dusted within two

hours. The AMS crew were fantastic.

And then there were two of us!!!

The adventure must continue without our navigator.

Andy, enlarge pic 4 and you

Andy, enlarge pic 4 and you can see how Chris's right foot is at 90 deg to his leg!

pic 5, Belinda was anxious that nothing else was broken so we were taking precautions to protect her "man"! Quote "I don't need any more broken legs!

pic 6, pilot standing behind me, do you recognise him?

The two paramedics from the ambulance service were absolutely amazing, nothing was too much trouble and they were very professional. The bloke in pic 4 realised the severity of the injury and made the right decision to call AMS, his judgment training saved Chris a lot of agony and a lot wasted time!

Some random cyclist (Michael ?) passing by offered to ride Chris’s bike back to Calitzdorp, so we kitted him up with Chris’s jacket, gloves and helmet, put him on the bike, loaded his bicycle into the ambulance and sent him on his way! I said to Trevor, imagine how pissed off Chris will be if we’ve just given his bike away to somebody we don’t even know from a bar of soap! Aren’t all “bikers” trustworthy? All’s well that ends well, he didn’t steal the bike, it’s on its way back to Cape Town and Michael is going to deliver the riding gear to Chris’s home, what a nice gesture.

Now that Chris, aka Donald Trump, had decided to call for his helicopter and leave his two buddies to explore the wilderness alone, I trust the in-flight entertainment was better than our company!!!

We missed you Chris, there wasn’t a moment that Trevor and I would think of you and say “we wish Chris was here to see this”.

Get well soon, the curry at Tsitsikamma Village Inn is waiting for you.

Hi Everyone, just like to say

Hi Everyone, just like to say thanks to all of you that have sent your best wishes for my recovery to Belinda and to those of you on the forum. So far so good, the leg is getting better every day but a still a long time to full strength.

I can’t recollect how the accident happened except to say that one second I was simply rounding an ordinary bend, the next I was crashing into the side of the rock face. A large sharp rock protruded from the face and it was that my leg had an altercation with, my leg lost!

I must say how amazing the response was from first the ambulance team, then the helicopter aircrew to the emergency crew at George Hospital. We see from a media perspective how the emergency services are not doing there job properly but the patient care I had was absolutely second to none! I can’t thank them all of them enough.

Also, big thanks to my remaining Musketeers, Trevor and Graham who with the assistance of Pam in Cape Town sorted the whole mess concerning contacting the emergency services and of course looking after my bike and gear. Geoff Russell my ole mate thanks for organising the bike from George to Cape Town. Belinda collected all my rider gear from Martin the cyclist who brought it to Cape Town. It was amazing how everything and everybody just came together. I didn’t have to worry about anything.

The George Medi Clinic is the best hospital I have experienced in South Africa. The place is spotlessly clean; the nurses are a credit to their profession. The doctor who handled my case Dr Bester did a fantastic job on my leg, which I am told was quite a difficult break to fix.

So all I have to do now is sit around for the next six to eight weeks..Yuck..!!!!
