Commuting daily- how do you pass the time

This morning I 'fell asleep' on the N2 and missed my ramp to the R300 -not for the first time.

Probably because I was deep in thunk. and what a detour that nap cost me

But it called to mind all the things I do while commuting to make the journey a little different.

I have 4 stop intersections and four traffic light intersections before I'm out of S/West and I have 3 stop intersections and 6 traffic light intersections from R300 to my office.

= 7 stop streets & 10 robots.

CRUISE CONTROL OVER ONE WEEK:

If I set my crusie control to 110kph, I consume 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres.

If I set it at 120, I consume 5,6 l/100km.

If I do not use cruise control I consume from 6.91 to 7.3 l/100km.

All the cars that zip ammagluglug passed me when I'm doing 110kph, I pass again before the R300 with ease.

I can ride the entire route on the RT without putting a foot to the ground 5 times out of ten.

On the 1150GS I easily do 9 out-of-ten trips, without touching the ground.

On the GS I seldom fall asleep because my throttle return-spring unwinds to rest if I don't keep a conscious grip on it. I must look so silly slowly slowing down to 30....

On the RT with crusie control, I often drop off into auto pilot. I arrive at my destination without the foggiest recollection of the journey details.

If the traffic so much as slips outta synch, I snap seamlessly into full concsiousness and immediately scan the environment around me for clues as to what 'woke' me.

On the GS I can easily ride standing up from garage door at home to parked in garage at work.

I have not had a speed ticket in 3 months.

I have not been pulled over while commuting for ±5 months.

I photograph many AARTO violations just 'cos I have a camera handy and the idiots hate been photgraphed and immediately chnage their behaviour to good from stupid.

90% of the cars make way for the bike.

The few that do not, don;t bother me at all.

GS/KTM riders greet me when on the GS, they do not greet me when on the RT.

Becuae I rarely drive at the same time each day, I can't really pick up cars I recognise. Although that may be bacuse I only have ±100meg RAM in my brain and that it over tapes within 1,5 days, so I can't build that picture anyway.

I often spend the time on the phone, touching base with key colleagues

and arrive at work in full operating trim.

I always arrive at destination in a very good mood.

I have not had a tar road incident/accident apart for the Famous Neil Berry scare incident in 2000, where I dropped my RT doing 20kph crossing railroad tracks at the V&A entrance (outside Auto Atlatinc BMW) and stood in front of Neil pink with blood from grazes to ask if he'd fix my bike.

But I often get 'jumped' by bikes speeding passed me at crazy speeds on the N2, and that often catches me unawares as they appear outta nowhere and their exhausts are so crazy-loud.

And I'm totally flumoxed about how many people throw their ciggy butts or ash out the window without thought to their rear view mirrors and who is iin their slip-stream.

But I long ago gave up 'educating' them.

My only tar incident was
My only tar incident was about 2 days after i got my bike. Grabbed a fistful of front brake and went down like a sack of potatoes. Recently I've started listening to music while riding... the type of music definitely effects how I ride. If I'm in the car... which I absolutely hate. I need to put on some reggae to keep me calm... and of course, there are things that go down well with that type of music which i shouldn't mention.....

I should add, that When in

I should add, that When in company with another bike and with a pillion my riding is the same except I never let my mind drift into thunk or to shift into auto-pilot.

I'm a very defensive driver and anticpate most crazy car maneuvers which has allowed me to ride so far accident/incident free.

I think, at 45k kilos a year ave since 2000 millenium, that makes it over half a million kilos without a tar road accident.

But it could happen tomorrow....

I hate routine.  I tend to

I hate routine.  I tend to take a different route every day and explore farm roads which take me on wide detours but are much more scenic and quiet that the tar roads.  I've never had a complaint from any of the farmers and the labourers all wave, so I also get to work in a cheerful mood.

My most recent incident was with a bulldozer.  One of the farmers has bulldozed his road to stop trespassers so I had to slip past it, go through the irrigation ditch, past the fence and a tree and out the other side before going through the river to get back on Baden Powell Drive.

Much more fun than guessing if the car in front is going to turn because it's brake lights came on (remember the rule? ... brake, turn, indicate with a single flash, then cross the remaining 3 lanes to get from the overtaking lane to the offramp :-) )
