DAGLO ORANGE TRANSLUCENT HEAD-LIGHT COVERS
16 July 2008 - 6:35am
I fitted an orange translucent perspex masks to my headlights.
I've prevaricated over this for ages, but after the Ceres 13 trip, (13 July 2008) I had to take action.
I had Robbie J in my mirrors quite a bit and his orange light masks make a bike very distinctive in traffic and very visible.
For me who filters through traffic daily on the N2, R300 & N1 this is a must have.
So I called in at Maizeys (Neptune street Paarden Eiland) and picked up an off-cut of the tranculent daglo, cut and fitted a mask.

for the F650GS, I'd like to make one for Annie, how do I bend and contour the ,ask to the curved profile of the 650 headlight?

I'm also collecting perspex of the daglo translucent type (3mm)in various colors so next time we do a ride we can distinguish out certain bikes by headlamp color. I'll cut them into standard sized discs to fit them adhoc for a ride.
Its a standard thing we do in helo rescues- the personal safety strobe lights have hoods of different colors so the rescue officer in the helo can distinguish his crew out in the muddle of water below.

Andy,
I didn't have the patience for the DIY thing, so bought one from Bones Hewitt. around R200 iirc.
Also, have found that it makes you more visible in the traffic ... sometimes all this means is that the idiots see you earlier and move to block your way (when filtering) earlier! Still, I think it's a useful addition.

Hi, I shaped perspex for a screen a while back by putting it in a oven and slowly increasing the temp until it become flexible. It was a 3 mm thickness if I can recall. Cheers!

Andyman,
I've seen Perspex
Andyman,
I've seen Perspex bent using a heatbox - you create a chamber that you can raise temperature, and you place your perspex over a mould of the item (obviously one that won't melt at higher temparatures) - and let it work it's magic over a time (too high temperature would just scorch the perspex or create an uneven mould).
The other option if it's a simple bend is to use a heatgun, although again, if you force it, you will create strain lines in the perspex.
Hope this helps.

How much would it cost to get a cover made for my 2007 GS? I ride through traffic in the morning myself and would also like to be more visible...

Are these orange headlight legal?
After observing how effective they were at the 2007 Beaver Rally I also bought one from Bones Hewitt and have been using it since. I have however been told by three different people that the traffic polic consider them illegal. In that case, what about the KTM's orange light?
Kobus
The cover I bought is only for the dip beam (big light). I leave the cover on at night and ride with the bright beam on as well. As the cover attaches with Velcro it is quick and easy to remove in poorly lit areas.

Seems like there is a good number of 650 owners (myself included) looking for a bent orange cover, especially after having the 'sweep' bike (with orange cover) follow us for a long distance on the Sutherland ride.
So I reckon we could give someone Acryl Form an order for 10 (or more), and they would be gone in no time?
Mayb e a Northern-Suburbs member could visit Stikland with a 650 so Jan Diener could tell us what's involved?

Nothing illegal about the light masks.
Fix with velcro.
Two type of velcro, the normal stuff we see every day and a heavy duty- 'large' barb velcro.
Available most hardware stores with an adhesive backing.

On the1200GS I use the clear perspex over the 'normal' beam and the orange perspex (from cape plastics in Paarden Island) over the brights. You can ride it then on normal but as soon as you get into heavy traffic or want to be more visible on comes the orange. Drivers definitely notice you and you can control it by not irritating them when standing behind them. Interestingly on the normal beam the light also 'filters' to the orange part making you a bit more visible from the side. Not so bad at night but people still notice you! You can probably also get away with it if the cops stop you because you're not running it always on...
Works for me.

I always ride with an orange cover
I got mine from Donford when they delivered my bike as a gift. As I commute daily, it makes a huge difference to my visibility. It attaches with velcro and should be removed for night time driving. My bike is easy as it has a round light. As far as it being illegal, I wouldn't know.

Hi Andy, we vacuum form
Hi Andy, we vacuum form Perspex into bath tubs and shower trays. If you heat it up in your oven to 160 deg. you can bend it easily. Make sure that it is almost like rubber when take it out of the oven , then place it on a smooth surface that has the shape that you want. Let it cool down and it will stay in that shape. Be careful not to expose it to the heater elements in the oven, this might burn the surface. Put it between two trays to protect it from the direct heat.
If you need more info you are welcome to contact me wolfgang@wode.co.za

After some work with a Hacksaw, followed by a low speed drill with a sanding attachment to get the basic shape, a heat gun was used to get a little curve in the perspex to follow the general lie of the headlight.
At the Quarry on Saturday I was sporting the new perspex orange day-glo headlamp cover, also used it through traffic this morning and FINALLY people are seeing me coming!
Thanks Andy for arranging to materials!
