Dakar 2012
So who is following it. A few massive crashes already shown amongst the bikes and some serious "I wish I could ride that that" riding skills on display.
We have local talent in there as well. Amongst them Darryl Curtis is lying 44th overall, 3 hours off the Depres, with a 40 minute penalty, and our own adopted Kiwi Chris Burch in 53rd place. He was lying 32nd on day two so must have had some mishap or got lost.
In the cars Geniel De Villiers is doing well in a car that is apparently quite a bit below the power of the cars he is riding with.
Alfie Cox's dreams went up in flames two days ago when his Volvo burnt out completely.
I certainly am Warren...................lots of great info on Adventure riders and on the Wild Dogs Forum as well.
Just a pity that we only get a mere 30 mins per day.
Wayne
Take out the ad time and we probably only get 20 minutes....then remove all the "history" shots and we get 15 then remove all the scenery shots and we get 10.........a flippen disgrace!!!
I am following this thread on wild dogs and get up-to-the-minute updates on the top riders and the saffers and adopted flightless birds. At 7am on SS6 is the half-hour show - and yes, it is short and the commentator's voice is hard to follow and irritating.
Chris Birch was leading the saffers then:
#110 CHRIS BIRCH... "I had a hell of a crash, a real big s**t mixer! Someone ran into me and off I went. I walked away without a scratch but the bike was quite damaged – the oil cooler was broken. I tried instant metal and that didn’t work. So I had to strip down the bike and bypass the oil cooler and work some Kiwi magic into it. I lost HEAPS of time I know, but it was all fixable and luckily I was fine. Of course I wish it didn’t happen but it’s not the end of the world and I am just going to get on with the rest of the race."
How was that tumble where the guy did two 360s and landed next to his bike on his feet!
Why I will not do this:
- Speeds on the bikes up to 200km/hr in places
- One guy bisected a cow at 175km/hr (just shows how well ATTGAT works - the rider ended up in hospital with bleeding kidneys, but the cow who was not even wearing a helmet ended up in two pieces).
- Long, long days, lack of sleep, riding beyond exhaustion then getting 4hrs sleep or less day after day. Just kill me now please.
- Oh, and the cost - bliksem, about half a million in total.
How was the Americans off…looked like he went head first into the gravel. He must have been out cold as he didn’t move for what seemed ages. His face looked a bit of a mess. These guys have big balls!!
Thanks for the link to the Wild Dogs thread Charles…lots of fantastic pix and lots of reading (42 pages)
Have caught up yesterday on all the days since day 1, as we were away. Have been following it since early 90's.
What a rally again in 2012!
... for every night's bit of footage, even though an hour a day would have been better ;-) Thanks Charles for that Wild Dogs link
