In 2007 the facts were:
There are two schools (charities) - the one being for less severely retarded children, and the other being for severely retarded children and adults. All are innocent victims of a much larger and ongoing problem in our society. They are neatly tucked away in Elim and almost forgotten by a very comfortable society.
At that stage, of the 49 children and adults, only 3 didn’t wear nappies. 4 wore crash helmets because of head-banging on walls. Most can't speak, and about 70% were transported in prams. The sad fact is that 75% of them are the result of FAS (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome). The rest have normal retardation, cerebral palsy and one 6year old is there with severe brain damage after falling out of a jungle jim. They also have a doctor and physiotherapist who help with movement stimulation and other ailments. About 95% have no family visiting them, because they are paralytically drunk, are in institutions, or have passed on. I'm sure there are even more children there now.
Helping them are several nurses and caring adults, as well as foreign missionary students who are there for 6 months to a year at a time. A few doctors and physiotherapists visit them daily.
Basic physical needs are, besides love and time - Food, funds and equipment, and obviously maintenance of equipment and the buildings.
So what can we do to help?

, I'm sure someone else can assist and I will collect from them later.
Alternatively you may drop off your goodies at Hamman Motorrad, who have graciously offered their assistance! Also if you live in the Southern Suburbs, you may drop off goods at Biketique who have also offered to be a collection point. Thank you!!
In the meantime we are working on the dates and logistics.
Thanks for your enthusiasm!!

Annie you are a Star
Please shout if you need any help....come on guys and girls lets make this happen.
Adrian
I can hardly think of a better cause than Elim/Mispa.
Not only do we make a happy difference in the lives of children that really do not deserve to be in the state they are, we also help the people who look after them - amazing people who do that work, full time, with the bare minimum of financial and material support from the "normal" world outside their fences.
And, most importantly - the visitors, us, normal and healthy, experience a very hidden side of society. We become aware of our own previleged life in a hard, sudden way.
It was the most moving experience I can think of in my life, visiting them first time. I walked in there with my wife & club members. Then, in an instant, I realised I had to be brave. But, after swallowing deeply a few times, i went outside and cried. After a while I was able to go back inside and help hand out presents and sweets. .... many kids were not able to open the simple paper bag and could not take out a sweet to put in their own mouth. Moving experience, a visit to Mispa.
I am happy to see this effort is under way and would like to support it.
Yeah, I echo what you say GK,
And we get to ride some really cool roads to get there n back.
Beofre the club got on with GS rides off road, JR used to organise the most awesome trips and he introduced mu to the wonders of the Tankwa, to the Great Karoo, and many other lovely destinatins in the Southern Cape.
On these rides Tanya set an example of contacting the community in the destinaiton area, finding out what needs they had, collecting a few bucks from us and then when we got there we distributed goodies, staionary or clothes or whatever.
We should do that on more rides, somehow we lost the plot.
Thanks Adrian, for being the Jimminy Cricket that brought some focus back.
Tanya & I have now pegged the date of 9 Aug 2011 (Woman's Day) for the Elim Charity Run.
Tanya's husband, JR will lead the off-road ride to Elim, and we will advise who will lead the tar run to Elim.
Please let us know what you can donate, and who will be able to ride with us; also whether you are riding tar or off-tar.

I'm in off-road...so long as it is a reasonably slow pace !
Let's make this the biggest ride ever...pass the word around and tell any fellow BMW riders you are mates with.(in case they do not read the posts)
Adrian Lee
the ride will be a reasonable pace and not difficult. We are on a charity run, not a charity dash!
Thanks Adrian!
Great news !
I hereby offer my services by you maybe letting me lead the road ride.
Graham Johnson
Biketique
Thanks Graham!!
I would like to join the off-road group.
Thank you all for taking the trouble to organise such a wonderful opportunity!
Hi Anne, I might not be a rider but I would like to drive there with my Condor filled with whatever we can collect.
Thanks Pam!
One Condor added to the list.
Please include me in the off road ride.
John Collins

Where are your roadies ??
See more info above for Elim House. Awaiting ages of children.
Still awaiting Mizpah wishlist/resident info.
Hi Annie, am potentially keen to join the dirty bunch (2 bikes).
Will bring some tins to the next Club meeting, but what about some good quality clothes as well? I have eg some t-shirts and a few warm tops that appear to have shrunk in the wash
; still lots of life left in them...
For their building maintenance, can you find out if they perhaps have any use for some paint? We may have some half-tins in the garage that can still be used.
Is it now tar all the way to Elim????
I am away that weekend.
Jip, tar all the way.
Just outside Bredasdorp there's a turn-off for Elim, used to be gravel +/- 30 km. The two groups wil meet up in Napier for a coffee/snack and from there everybody leaves together as 1 group.
My naam ook op die lys asb, (Danie Malan).
Grondpad.
Dalk gaan 'n pillion saam (Carle of Riene).
Ek het 'n bydrae per EFT gedoen.
We need people on tar!!! Yep tar all the way to Elim! If you've never been to Elim, now's the time to see this quaint little town which is famous for thatching.
Please keep checking the list at the top. I'm updating the wishlist as I get the info.
I'll add you to the tar group - Thanks!!
We are not obsessed with gravel - will go on tar please: Julie and Charles
