Gravel Roads around Stellenbosch

I am looking for some easy going gravel roads, firm surface and if possible without sand and loose pebbles, not more than about 150Km radius from Stellenbosch.

The idea is to introduce a friend of mine, who bought himself a dual purpose bike, to the other side of life. He has never done gravel before, only had roadbikes in the past and I do not want to give him a fright on his first few trips, rather want to make him enjoy it.

After a few practice runs it will be Country Trax Intro and the rest (GS ? ) will follow.

Any idees will be appreciated.

Try the Paarl Mountain

Try the Paarl Mountain reserve. Loads of nice roads up there and it is fairly easy. There is only one steep downhill to look out for.

Highlands road sometimes gets corrugated.. and the descent to Kleinmond road is often slippy, bumpy.. easy once you get the hang of it.

Or is this the wrong road? (Grabouw to Kleinmond)?

Willem, this club has a

Willem, this club has a beginners ride Sunday 22 August.

Durbanville to Parrl, via Paarl mountain's Jan Philiips Drive.

Its a morning ride.

suitable for very novice riers and very pillion friendly.

We ride through farm land.

Diarise and bring your friends along

We'll stop for Brunch in Paarl and have quite few stops to take photos, adjust bikes and comment on the terrain.

As ideal for someone who has never ventured off tar as it is for the person that thinks they know it all.

Many experienced riders will come a long because it is such a nice close-by ride only 170 kilometres total, so no need to fuel up on the ride.

110 kilos to our brunch stop and 64 kilos back to Durbanville.

Watch the forum for the Begginers morning gravel ride to Paarl .

if you're taking that road..

if you're taking that road it's nice to go on to Teslaarsdal (where a BMW ride is going soon) - that's a really great road! and then go on towards Cape Aghulas.. ah! yes, we gotta stick within the 150km limit.

Hmmm, the Stanford to Cape Aghulas route wouldn't work. Too far.

Gravel options

The Slent road (between the Durbanville silos (R302) and Voorpaardeberg/R44 (near Windmill Winery) is currently in fairly good condition. It's short (around 8km); just keep your eyes open for the sand pits that develop in the centre, especially near the compost plant.

Short 3km section at the back of Malanshoogte (really good condition) en route to Philadelphia is always fun.

Also try the dirt road that runs from Wellington towards Riebeeck Kasteel; enter it from Lady Loch side, come back via the gravel on the other side of Riebeeck Kasteel/Malmesbury.

Have fun!

To follow on from this..

That Wellington - Reibeek is called Haas..something, great road, watch out for school kids and various populace. Try not ride it late Friday afternoon - unless very careful - the dop system is active there, drunk labourers make sudden turns, and they're harder than a dog when hit. Cry

Riebeek Wes to Malmesbury - entrance just past RW to left - at T junction turn left to Malmesbury, right to Moreesburg. Pretty road, also a little sandy at the start (wiggles the bum a bit at times)

Riebeek Wes to Moreesburg - turn right, at T junction to Moreesburg

The guy's original question was for an easy road to almost learn on - Slent Road can, at times, be quite a challenge, tank slapper style, but as a means to an end.. great.

There's also a road near Paarl R44 that goes thru farmland and a gate to arrive at a T junction, turn right to come out right next to Lady Loch. A bit sandy in places (toward T junction), farmland has no fences, cows around.

Near Hermon, there's Zonkwasdrif, great in the rainy season as the lag water bruggie gets flooded - gives good experience of standing, looking up and praying :) (actually the road is wide enough to wiggle a bit, unlike the Slanghoek bridge which is not advisable when flooded.
