Heidenau 150's ?

Hi guys,

I would love to get a set of Heidenau's for my GSA but Geoff alerted me to the max load rating of 375kg. With pillion and bike full of fuel I'm sure we'll top that - and that's without luggage.

Is this a serious issue?

I've heard rumours of a 150 Heidenau for the rear, some say it's still being tested, what's the low-down - is it available and if so, where? Does it have a higher load rating?

Heidi 150's

It is the best tyre by far that I've ever used, with no issues whatsoever under any conditions - from off road to long trips to track day. I'm sure they need no more testing - if that is so  that someone is still not convinced. Get them and more info from Chris Louw: Cell 0721197576. E-mail chrislouw@easycoms.co.za

Tyres

I do know that this subject has been discussed at length somewhere else on this forum. You might want to have a look on Wild Dogs.

I have used the K 76  on the 1200 GS and found them to be as good as the Tourance on surfaced and dirt roads. The average kiloage distance is between 10 and 12K based on the last 4 tyres. We have used them 1  and 2 up with panniers and top box. Good value for money.

No experience with the K60, sorry but Charles does, I am sure he will comment on his findings.

I know that Biketique in Diep River also sells them.

tyres

also have a look athe Mitas tyres - discussed at length on WD

I put a mitas e07 on my 800 before sutherland (unfortunately they also only come in 140/80 - 17") but it appears the actual dimension is very close to a 150.

having previously had a battlewing & scorpion (st) on the bike I can safely say the tyre is miles ahead on the dirt - can't compare to heidenau etc as I haven't used those

a mate put them on his ATM 990 and did a trip of 6500 km to zambia - reckons they are about 50% worn

Got them at rockgarden in SS - very helpful

Weight rating

Thanks for the input guys, but I don't need convincing about the Heidenau's having - eventually! - used up a set on my 800GS - took me 15,000 km through all sorts of terrain.

My only concern with using the Heidi's on the 1200 GSA is the max weight rating of 375kg. Rider, pillion and dry bike already tops that. So my questions are general ones related to tyre weight ratings:

1. What are the risks of exceeding the load rating? Burst tyre? Blow out if it comes off the bead? Side-wall failure?

2. Is the max load rating a function of the Vmax? In other words, would the tyre have a higher load rating if used at a lower max speed?

I want to make an informed decision, and adapt my use of the bike & tyres so as to minimise risk and maximise tyre life. Having scoped out a few other big bikes on the pillion course with Heidi 140's on, I've pretty much decided to go ahead with this, and just take it easy when I'm loaded up. Any additional info or opinions is muchly appreciated!

Heidenau K60 140/80 17 has a

Heidenau K60 140/80 17 has a load rating of 69 - 325kg. Don't forget the front tyre. Heidenau K60 110/80 19 has a load rating of 59 - 243kg. Combined max load of 568kg.

Now all you need to determine is the weight distribution between front and rear tyres.

Also remember that load rating is the maximum load the tyre can carry when fully inflated - this load index / tyre pressure combination is indicated in small "print" on the sidewall.

To allay your concerns have a look at the tyre specifications (load index, speed rating, pressure, etc) on stock tyres on new GSAs.

Mr.Badger weighs more

Julie and I did Baviaans, fully loaded and with tank bag, with K60s.  We went up the big passes at the end, and did some high-speed tar as well.  No problems at all.  And yes, the full weight of the bike does not rest on one tyre.  May I suggest that you don't wheelie great distances while two-up Smile

Ah-ha
Thanks, Tony for clarifying that - the missing link in my understanding was that the load is shared between the wheels in terms of their rating...duh, seems obvious in retrospect. LOL @ Charles
