Andy Connel is swamped with preparing the routes for the Club Fest event in Oudtshoorn, and desperately needs to fix his bike's luggage rack.  We have all gotten help from Andy at some time or other - now is a chance to return the favour.

At 170 000km, his luggage grid has fractured and is now in two pieces.

Part No:   465 476 780 34

Part needed for 1150GSAPart needed for 1150GSA

Does anybody:

  • know where he can source a used replacement (previously owned)?
  • what the cost of a new replacement will be?

Please reply to this post or contact me (Charles) on 083 309 6079

Ok, New

New, the part is R1300.  It is the standard bracket at the back of the bike it seems.  Anybody got a second-hand part or know where we could source one?

Charles what about plastic

Charles what about plastic welding. I've some stuff repaired by Clives Customs in Paarden Eiland and it is a strong repair looking at the work from the non veiw side. If it ever breaks again it won't be there.

That may be an option

I just don't know the nature of the damage of the bracket.  Will follow up - thanks.

Where to source BMW Parts

Get it from http://www.james-sherlock.co.uk/.

Likely to cost just over 50% of the price in SA, and takes just 2 weeks to get here - same as any orninary domestic snail mail

Thanks warm hearts

Charles, you make me blush, thanks very much.I don't mind digging deep for the new part if and only if there is no previously owned part lying on a csrapped bike or a garage.

I guess the current tray just boiunced that many time too often over rough terrain with tool kit and first aid kit on the back.

Finally calling it quits and snapping its tail piece off.

I can't accept credit for the routes, souls far greater than me are doing that.

I'm screwing the medical guys together for the event that sweep the routes and call in the quacks if needed.

What's it made of?

Andy, is that aluminium?  If so, Danie GK can help with an aluminium welder that he knows.

It is Aluminium. However, the

It is Aluminium.

However, the rub is the nature of assembly.

It needs absolute flat on top to host the Plastic Topbox, mount tray.

And it needs to nest onto the steel subframe.

This leaves precious little weld area for any nartisan to work with and not compromise the fitting.

Gary Koen would be the first choice if I were to weld.

The fracture is a fatigue crack that developed and spread do to the extended pariods off road with a loaded bag or top=box and so a weld with little 'meat' would not have good load-bearing.

I think I'll take Hamman Motorrad's offer and order the new part immediately so I can carry the medical and tool kit on the Bike Fest 2010 event this coming weekend.

Thank you all for the assistance.

A few of us can chip in

Nows the time for anybody who has received puncture worms, valves, tubes, cable-ties or other material assistance from Andy (who ends up replenishing his supplies out of his own pocket).  Just show a small financial token of your appreciation to keep Andy on the road.

I'm in to chip in at least R100.  Who else?

Up the bid

C'mon folks. Andy is one of the anchors of the club!!! If it wasn't for folks like him, we wouldn't be the dynamic club we are today.  He's helped many of us out the proverbial crap when we've been in it, and no expectation of re-imbursement, but that's Andy. I'm prepared to up my bracket bid to R150....

Don't sweat the small stuff

Charles your suggestion, how/where would you like us to pay?

Bank Details

Let's pay it into the club account, then Roz can re-imburse him.  That way we keep it all visible and accountable.  Please use reference of AC-BRACKET.  That allows Roz to pick up all deposits intended for Andy Connell.

Also, all, please pay just R100 or not at all.  Keep the amount constant so there is no one-upmanship or sense of obligation or entitlement (and it's easier to account).  Also, there is no obligation on other club members.  If you don't know Andy, or never needed or wanted his help, then don't feel that you need to contribute.  Even 5 people chipping in will halve his expense in this regard.

Bank account details:

  • First National Bank
  • Branch:Long Street
  • Branch code: 201709 (Standard Bank users must add 2 zeros at the end)
  • A/c no: 50060098602
  • A/c name: BMW Motorcycle Club Cape
  • Ref: AC-BRACKET

Please email the EFT payment remittance to rmessenger@telkomsa.net or anne@abarc.co.za.
