I no longer do Windows, and now not doing Telkom either!
Chatting to PeterO about this he asked me to post some details.
Soon after joining the club, I heard of the forum and being curious, and needing more info about my bike, with regards to things such as tyres, puncture repairs, maintenance etc. I joined the forum. At that stage, I had a Windows machine and dial-up ADSL. I then upgraded to a 384? ADSL line. After numerous problems with Windows, Outlook crashing etc, I bought a second-hand Mac book, and used a USB dongle with Vodacom during the day,, and Windows at home. The more I used Mac the more I liked it…. I then I then to plunge, ditched Windows and bought an iMac, and then upgraded to the latest MacBook Pro. I also switched to CellC for the data, their 5 gig month for 12 mnths = R3000. The speeds were a huge up on my 384 Adsl line!
In many cases, a you Tube video runs without any buffering. I have now are also ditched my ADSL line, having bought a Netgear broadband and wireless router. I've inserted my cell C5 Gig card in it, it then feeds my Apple Time capsule, giving the wireless network throughout the flat. There are some drops in the signal, but on the whole this set up is much cheaper and very much faster than my previous ADSL line. My next consideration is to do away with my Telkom landline.
I also purchased Dragon Dictate for Mac and use this instead of typing things out I dictate the document then cut and paste which is much much faster for a one finger typist, in fact this was done with Dragon Dictate. It is not perfect, need some correction, but then I have not spent much time at all training the program to recognise my voice sufficiently at this stage, yet I'm still more than satisfied it beats one finger typing hands down. If anyone wishes for more info you welcome to either post on this thread, PM me, or phone.
Cheers
N
This post, and the bit that I did on the Heidenau tyre thread, were done with Dragon dictate directly dictating into the post's window (Charles sorry to use the W word)
.
It seems your spelling has improved too?
Im a dinosour when it comes to IT and I must say after reading your post that I'm tempted to through windows and pc out the flippen window.
I will look for a used Mac and take the plunge some day Im sure,
Charles your memory possibly needs a defrag.....it is one of you 1150 GSA riders who has the spelling/ spell- check issue!
Russ, what swung things was the Outlook mail crashes, and the need then to have an IT person fix it....and for that I had to wait at home, plus the costs of Anti Virus, added to the very pricy upgrade costs XP > Win7 and Office 2003 > 2007....this became pricey to maintain.
With Mac I can pop into Century City iStore at night/ weekend for help...@ N/C, as I bought there....overall the initial expense has been recouped by almost nil IT costs....a bit to set up home network, and away since then.
