Poor old BMW don't seem to be able to keep their heads above water the honourable way any longer. Got a letter in the post today advising that the premium on the F650GS is going up by 26% to a minimum premium of R390.00 on 1 January 2010. Em... aren't we all experiencing hard times? I had a very cordial discussion with a consultant who, in her own words, said "What we are doing with this letter is to give you a chance to shop around for a better price". So it doesn’t matter that you have had a spotless 3 year cover for two bikes. Take it or leave it…

Got the same letter
Got the same letter Mike! Same response when phoning then phoned around and could not improve on the new premium. Probably got to do with the huge number of claims they have to pay out. Will still pay praying that that rainy day does not come!!!!

Whoa, didn't they have another huge increase earlier in the year? These guys are worse than Eskom with their tariff hikes.

That's why we don't insure
That's why we don't insure with BMW..... But seriously, I can see why. We use Goeie Hoop as one of our couriers and the driver often has BMW motorcycles in the back of his truck, destined for some scrap yard or salvage place in Jozi. Written off basically because of scratches. Last Wednesday there was a GS1200 which to me looked in pretty good nick, except for some deepish (won't come out) scratches to quite a bit of the right side including screen, crash bars, engine pod protector, exhaust and the whole tank - side panel thing. Written off - as beautifull as she still was. Personally, the damage really wouldn't have bothered me and if it did, someone like Clive's Customs in Paarden Eiland would have been able to fix the panels at least for a reasonable sum of money. My opinion is, that if you are going to use the machine off road, then you are going to quite possibly end up with scratches, dents and the odd bent thing. Live with it.

No, I'm looking around for
No, I'm looking around for an 800GS that's written off due to scratches. That way I will be able to afford it, '''and''' I won't be scared to ride it like it was meant to be ridden... Website Administrator [http://honeybadger.net Honey Badger IT Services]

Warren, seen that scrap yard
Warren, seen that scrap yard and nearly bought a rebuild from them a while back. One cannot buy parts, only rebuilds. Funny thing is that you are able to insure these rebuilds through BMW too... :| Insurance is important for those cheap little incidentals like headlamps, oil coolers/radiators and the like but I rather like my battle scars.

Let's see if I can reply
Let's see if I can reply calmly - after holding on for 23 minutes with BMW Financial Services ...... Would love to hear from those that are insured at "other" companies. Please post details of the companies and brokers. PS - got the same letter, fortunately it came after the weekend. Bearing in mind that I was on max no claim bonus, this means a wopping 40% increase for me !!!!

Although not insured with
Although not insured with BMW FS, one of my 650's went down a few weeks ago. A few scratches and a dented front wheel. Cost to repair, a massive R63,000.00. Went to look at the bike and, instead o replacing panels, got a revised quotation to repair. New cost, R28,000. Unless the insurance companies move away from this "write it off at all costs" mentality, people re going to continue getting screwed. Got the same letter. Phoned
Got the same letter. Phoned my regular broker, IndweRisk, and got a quote for R333.34 The insured amount for my F650GS twin (2008 model) will be R72400, don't know if that is correct though, but it sounds like it could be. Asked about procedure for repairs and they will not stipulate who you must use to do any repairs, thus if I prefer a BMW dealer to do the repairs, then they will accept their quote to repair the bike. Excess is 5% or minimum R500. If you do what Lawrence has done and go to see what will be replaced and opt not do replace a panel or two because there's only a little scratch in a hidden place, then that must surely bring the cost down and keep the premiums down for us all. I'll sleep on it, but I think BMW fin services have lost me as a client...

I am not insured with BMW
I am not insured with BMW and only pay about R160 per month. They are aware that I go off-road with the bike and has no problem with it. What makes the BMW insurance so special? Is there anything I should know?

WhoooHooo, monthly premium
WhoooHooo, monthly premium increase does not apply to me. But probably only because I'm already paying them a small fortune. Also, had the value of my bike adjusted, so my premiums actually came down by a whole R20. Hahaha. Now, I don't know if this is a lot, but my bikes value is R58,000 and my panniers and topbox at R12,000. My monthly premiums are R390.

A little tip for those who
A little tip for those who are staying with BMW insurance. I had resigned myself to paying the minimum R390.00 as per the recent letter. I recently bought panniers for the 650GS (subject of the orriginal post on this thread) and had a top box which I had not included in the insurance orriginally to keep the premium reasonable. So I call our friendly BMW Fin Svcs consultant today and request that these be added to the policy, value R19 000.00 in total. "Sure sir, no problem. Hold on a sec and I'll quote your new premium..." Silence... "Sir, please hold on for a moment..." Eveeeeeeentually, "OK sir, ummmm, your new premium is R390.00" Anyone got an old tank bag I can have?
