Dirtbike Fundamentals - Eselfontein 2010
I got a dirtbike to 'play' on, in order to improve my adventure bike riding skills. I really wanted to learn how to wheelie, and practising on Mr. Badger was getting expensive.
Once I had the bike, I needed to learn how to ride it properly, and put my name down for the Country Trax Dirtbike Fundamentals Course, even before there was one scheduled for the Western Cape.
Long before the course arrived, I was practising the skills in this video:
Tankwa tranquility & Gannaga glee
“I really have a need for open spaces,” I said to my husband earlier in the week. We had been booked to go on Donford’s Tankwa trip, but that was cancelled when they were short of the required 30 riders.
“Let’s go anyway,” came the laconic reply.

Sutherland Love Trip (May 2009)
DAY ONE :
I’m still half asleep when I leave home around 7 am , but soon wake up when I enter into a hefty skid on the corner of Koeberg and Plattekloof Road, after riding straight into a solid mass of fresh black diesel. Now this is not entirely my fault, the car in front of me had been going so slowly that it was practically going backward. What else has a girl to do, except overtake the car in the corner? , but then leaving me no time to see the Diesel Devil before it grabbed me. Luckily Freak had given me a set of tappet protectors last month which saves the day , as the one protector ( with a bit of help from the handlebars) takes the entire weight of the fall .The lurking Tow Truck driver helps me pick up the bike and tries to convinces me that the bike must rest. I laugh and tell him no it’s a BMW, they fall beautifully. I am soon on my merry way, thanking God, Freak and BMW’s for boxer engine design.
The Longest Day
The round trip from Cape Town to Wupperthal is usually done over a weekend with an overnight stop somewhere in the Cedarberg. How appropriate then, to do the trip on the longest day of the year with Geoff Russell on a route that seemed to include all the interesting dirt this side of Wupperthal.
There are those who say you wouldn't need to stop overnight if you weren't carrying all that camping gear. So we traveled light and fast, rising around 5am, and getting home at 8pm. The longest day.
Swartland Engen 1-Stop : 06h45
Rendezvous for breakfast and 7h30 departure. I had managed to convince Shaded Alan to meet me en route at 6h15 (he had wanted to meet an hour earlier - I think he may have confused the Swartland 1-Stop with the one at Langebaan Lagoon :-)
An unorganised International trip
Four degrees Celcius Saturday morning in Ceres belies the sun's heat, but the expectations of the coming week and many gravel miles heats up our bodies.
On the very bad road between Loeriesfontein and Pofadder mishaps forced two bikes to return home, luckily without serious injuries.
Augrabies Falls an -Park deserve a six day visit all by itself.
At Karoopoort the customary stop to adjust suspension and tyre pressure

Mr. Badger does Matroosberg 2008
The Matroosberg weekend 2008 was the third time that Leon Kroucamp and his merry band (Liza his better half, and Lourens van Rensburg) from Country Trax had organized a camping weekend in preparation for the GS Challenge.
The event is fairly exclusive, catering mostly for people that have undergone the official [http://www.countrytrax.co.za/ Country Trax dual-sport offroad training]. A lot of the riding is technical.
From the comments of those who had attended the previous weekends, the skill levels of the riders has improved over the years. It was clear that Leon and Lourens' training has had a large part to play in the general ability of this group of riders.
Ceres ride out - Sunday 7th September 2008
GRIN FACTOR - 5
Firstly, thanks to everyone for being on time!
Sunday started as I came skidding in with seconds before the 9h30 departure time. Everyone else's watches are FAST!
It was a pleasure to have a few new additions to the ride. Jean Pierre and his better half as well as the esteemed Dr Govender. Thanks to Atlantic chaps for letting them know about the ride, their company was great.
The mob gathers, Don't know why Wolf is smiling, must be a good day!
Given that we were determined not to ride motorway, Wolfgang led us "round the houses" out of Plattekloof and through Durbanville. Leaving Durbanville we came across a police road block checking the criminals with no number plates and licenses. All this while cars with buckled and wobbling wheels are simply waved through. Idiots!
