My Tooltube fitted

After the trip to Transkei I realized I must make a plan with the tubes I bought. I have an aftermarket top box as BMW's one is way too small. I also have the standard BMW pannier system on.

I wanted to have the option of using my panniers on small rides and then removing them on extreme ones. I still wanted to have the tool tubes for the necessary tools and medic kit.

So this is what I did. I made 3 brackets. The first one is to fit on top of the back compartment where the red seat lever sits. You remove the original 4 bolts that are screwed into the frame. These are replaced with a bit longer ones with Allan key type – nut and bolts +- R5 each. I used quite big washers underneath. This is to spread the load. I drilled all the necessary holes and made a small cut out so that the plate can be moved backwards. This is so that the pillion has more space and not been pushed by the top box.

The second plate is used to fit the bracket of the top box on. I drilled all the holes and mounted the bracket of the top box onto it.

Option 1. To use only the small bracket

The third bracket is for the tubes. I placed the second plate on it and drilled exactly the same holes. The holes that the top box bracket would have used where made a bit bigger. I also drilled all the holes for the tubes. The middle hole of the front of the tube was used for a piece of string that was connected to the lid of the tube. I did not want it to fall off or lose it.

.

Notice the bigger holes where the top box bracket would have been fitted. I made 3 extra holes in the back for the cargo net.

You have now 2 options now here. Just fit the second plate with the bracket on and use the top box on its own or fit the bigger plate underneath the second plate and now you have your tubes. All sides were rounded off so no one will get hurt. It is also placed quite far backwards. The plate I used was 2mm thick and it was mild steel.

Option 2 . To use it with the tubes

Anyone else have better ideas please mention it. Maybe we can get a universal ones made for the 650's and the 800's.

There is brackets for the 1200's. Check it out here - http://www.bmwmotorcycleclubcape.co.za/luggage-extension-amp-goosetoob-b...

Also check http://www.bmwmotorcycleclubcape.co.za/hijack-goose-toobs for other type of ideas been done on the 650's.

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handlebars to the saddle

Looks great Leon. I have the standard BMW topbox, so will have to make a few changes.
