Mystery Ride 7th March
Hi all
The mystery ride still remains a mystery. It is plus/minus 150 kms long and a plus/minus 2 hour ride.
We will depart from the usual departure point at the Engen garage in Plattekloof at 08h00 on Sunday morning 7th March for the start point near Wellington.
Each rider will receive a booklet at the start and your kilometre reading and start time will be written into the booklet at the start and at the finish. You do not have to be a rocket scientist to read the simple instructions and directions in the booklet.
I will set everyone off from that point starting at 09h00. On completion of the ride back at the start point, we will head off to the lunch venue where Julie (owner) will have a fantastic menu for us to choose from at R70.00 per person including the tip.
At this venue, I will work out the winners and losers and there are some fantastic prizes to be won and handed out after the lunch.
Remember that if you are not at the lunch and your name gets called as a prize winner, you forfeit and the next name in line will get the prize.
This ride is designed for all to have FUN and encourages pillions to attend as they would be a great help on this tour.
If you have any questions about this ride, please contact me at bmessenger@telkomsa.net or 021 914 8688.
One question I will NOT answer is, what the route is. If asked you will get a standard reply – I do not know.
We look forward to have all of you on this tour and enjoying yourselves.
Brian, do we have to book for this or just pitch up.
The wife & I will be there.
Hi Brian
I will be there, can I join you at the start location in Wellington?
Regards
Daniel Nelson
Yes please, Brian
Hi Brian
Can you please tell ME which route you are taking the members on?
All you have to do is pitch up at the departure point on Sunday 7th March. There is no cost involved other than paying for your lunch and drinks at the lunch venue.
We start at the start and finish at the start point. As per the post on questions that I will not answer, this is one - I do not know.
Hi Brian
Can you please tell ME which route you are taking the members on?
He won't tell you.. cos he's a big MEANIE!! :)
PS, why don't the smileys work any more?? Charles?
You need to use the smileys in the toolbar - click the thing that looks like this:
works on the Mac, but wasn't on windowsXP FFox 3.6.....what are you using Jeremy, and are you usuin the Smiley >window which pops up??
Brian, it looks like there's a good chance that I'm in. But I can't find any Smiley's either! Where have they gone?
Not seeing it, Charles, all I've got is "Format", the camera and teaser separator
I went in as you and got the full toolbar (I'm on Firefox 3.5, what are you using?)
Meanwhile, I have made some changes to the caching of javascript files. Refresh the page and tell me if there is any difference.
I have it, I click on it, and the window pops up,....empty.....damn, I have no emotions, sorry, no damn, just nooo emotions.
Works now, thanks. Charles, the magician!!

Wish he would wave his wand over my pc!
NO Cloud, Buddy and a few others, JUST as it is on the page!
Ok, he must have waved his wand in the direction of my head, I tried switching of my Anti Virus...working...I have now loaded this as a trustworthy site...(charles swears it is) and all is well.
I told him my sad tale before this, and he just ignored me...., ah well I've learnt something!
This was another great ride, MANY thanks to Brian and Dave and Atlantic Motorad, for organizing the ride and sponsoring prizes, really nice ones!!!
Was a warmish trip with some wind down Voel Vlei dam way( what's new?)..... and a different take on Bains Kloof......"speed is your friend"....so 60 kph... to keep it at that speed, I rode it one handed...and found it a really great exercise to ride it like that.
Good lunch and prize giving.....Warren and Natalie featured in the "breaking/ ignoring the rules section,no surprise, but won a nice prize for their 'efforts'.....Brian ought one to encourage them???
Over lunch the usual ' cat removal' and other performance mods came to the table, some wag commented ' diet, and learn to ride your bike properly!'....
One the return the heat was such that I had to close my visor, and turn my heated grips to full to keep my hands cool! Getting to Durbanville, things cooled down a bit.
Thanks again to Atlantic Motorad and Brian and Dave.
Thanks for the well organised run today. This was our first run with the Club and we joined friends Natalie & Warren. I think the fact that we won the prize for doing the Mystery Run in the fastest (!) time was maybe partly due to the fact that my other bike is an R1 ??? (or the fact that we had Wendy as pillion who wrote as we rode so no need to stop)
Well organised and great prizes - Natalie won a super set of Rica gloves, I got a luggage net and Wendy & Warren each won an Atlantic Motorrad T-Shirt -thanks very much to the sponsors.
Lunch was great and you could order anything - as long as you wanted either a Burger and Chips, A Chicken Wrap or Salmon fish cakes -everything was obviously served HOT. (How did they get the chicken to lay still while they wrapped it???)
Thanks for a great ride and well organized run
Mystery Run: 31 Degrees at 8.30 a.m !!
Brian lays down the rules!
We're back and Brian and the bosses decide on the winners...
We won for being the fastest(Is that a compliment?)
Have a great week !!
Craig & Wendy
Well done on a well organised mystery tour. In spite of the odd missing T-junction (near Wolsley) I don't think anyone got lost - even those of us that rode without our regular navigators
.
We started the ride in warmish 37C temperatures. This forunately dropped to a more pleasant 30C through the Nuwekloof Pass. Temperatures remained steady enroute until Wellington - 39C. Having completed the "tour" things started hotting up - literally! Temperatures on the way home after prize giving and lunch reached a steady 47C and only eased slightly once in Durbanville (42C).
All in all a fun (if somewhat hot day).
PS those of you considering a new S1000RR may want to reconsider. Warren and Natalie easily "outran" the S1000RR winning the hooligan prize with a time of 1hr 44min
.
PPS I'm was really impressed at how easily the S1000RR negotiated the twisties even at the very low speed of 50-60km/h as I followed Chris through Bains Kloof.
I joined the very HOT day as a guest and found the outing very enjoyable. I did not have lunch, to HOT, but the MILKSHAKE was very nice. THANK YOU Brian for arranging the day. Well done!
TONY:
I was slow? Oh yes I was, when riding in a group I conform to the group's speed. When I lead a group of more than 5 people I always ride slow. I will most certainly irritate some of the s riders, but it makes it possible for the back of the group, easier to follow. It is always important to consider the group as a whole. The last person must always be more capable than the front runners as the gaps for passing cars and stopping at the red robots always presents some challenges.
PS. One more thing - ......
HAMMAN MOTORRAD - we came with 15 bikes and enjoyed it all.
Hi Chris, thank you
and we are glad that the 15 bikes were able to join the mystery ride and it makes our day when you all say that you enjoyed it. We hope to see you all on the next one.
The other thing I enjoyed with the mystery ride was the riding alone..every now and again was passed, but by and large I rode alone, still the group ride there and the group at lunch, the alone and groupriding was a nice mix.
Nice crowd too.
Thanks for arranging such a great outing for the Club members and guests guys. All your efforts are hugely appreciated.
Great also to see Hamman Motorrad joining in the fun as well.
Thanks Brian for an awesome day, fortunately I was one of those on the Oudtshoorn ride so it didn't seem that hot. Then again, it's the first time we've ever ordered bottled water in a restaurant for the sole purpose of throwing it over one's self.
I am afraid Craig and Wendy must take just about all the credit for the hooligan prize, all we really did was try to keep up, which on a thumper wasn't fun all the time. I didn't particularly enjoy that wind either.
Our time also included a short but enjoyable excursion down a dirt road at 90 something kilometers and they also had to wait for us in Wellington as I said to Natalie I am not going to ride this pass for the third time in a few weeks and not stop to look around, so we did, twice.
It was like an oven on the way home though and I kept checking behind my GPS to see if the heat warning light was on. And there was a nasty fire raging about half way to Durbanville, I hope they got it under control soon.
We also had an "oops" moment in Plattekloof Road as there was a bit of a traffic jam in front of the refinery. We were already in the right hand lane and there was no oncoming traffic so we gave it a little squirt down the wrong side of the road, crossing a couple of lines I suppose we shouldn't have. Then across the island and over the robot in the turn right only lane. That's when I saw the traffic officer sitting in his car facing us outside the refinery. I slowed very quickly and did more hooligan stuff by going between stationary cars to get to the turn left lane, which we followed all the way to the robot, which was red. All this with Natalie tailing me by 2 meters.
As he had been shaking his hand at us I was waiting anxiously for the robot to turn green, all the while checking my mirrors to see if he would do a U turn to come and "talk" to us, but he didn't, green light and home without further law breaking.
A very good day out.
Hi Andy,
We've never met but i've obviously "heard " you regularly on this site. You seem like the most obvious guy to perhaps help me with some info on my 1150 GSA.I've had my bike for 4 years now(50 000kms) & have never needed to look for a toolkit (what a bike!!!!!).
Looked for it the other day but it doesn't seem to be there.Bottom line is that i need a toolkit but we're planning a trans americas tour @ beginning 2011 and i'd like to get a compact kit for the bike which'll cover most eventualities.
You seem to be the guy who fixes everyones bike on the rides so thought you might have some advice??
regards tony
Thanks Brian and Dave.
It was once again a great ride. Nice route and loads of scenery. I will in future require clarity on what Brian considers Rivers. LOL
One note, please do not forget to put the heaters off when you guys leave the Boland!!!! Its f.............. hot today.
Many thanks to Brian for the superb organising, and Dave for some awesome prizes! It was a most enjoyable (albeit hot!) outing.
