Hi there,

I am still very new on this site and on my bike. I was wondering if there is someone who are willing to ride with me and help me to get familiar with my bike? I can ride, but need some guidance and confidence! Any help will be appreciated. I know it is hard to give up some private time. Thanks, Liz.

The right place

Hi Liz

You are in the right place.  As a club we love helping people learn, gain experience and confidence.  Look out for beginners rides that are organized by Geoff and Andy and PeterO.  Also, feel free to come along on any breakfast ride (every second sunday) where we take care of newcomers also.

There are also training courses you can do to learn the right things in a friendly environment.  I started with the Country Trax Intro to Offroad one day course which was a brilliant start also for tar riding.  There are also other trainers advertising on this site.

I'm sure you will get no end of offers to help.

kind regards

Charles

Hi Charles, thank you for

Hi Charles, thank you for replying so quickly. The thing is, I need a little one on one first. Just to get my confidence up again. Im trying to find someone who is willing to assist me for a few rides. I have been to lessons, but need some experience. Not in group, need confidence before i go that route! I am very VERY passionate about riding and LOVING my GS! Just need a little help before I unleash myself in the crowd!

RIDING BUDDIES

Hi Liz,

I'm also from the N/Subs (Durbanville) with a similar "predicament". Come to the next monthly club meeting and talk to some of the people. I'm also very new to the club and don't know too many people... yet.

You looking at doing tar or dirt riding?

In the same boat

Hi,

Pretty much in the same boat here. Although I may be a little rustier, it was 10 years ago that I rode a bike.
I'm busy commuting daily already, but dont know the bike to well in terms of what it really can do.

Would love to join a breakfast run at some point, I just get nervous with other bikes around me, cars not. I'm sure that has to the otherway round

Have no fear

On the BMW Club rides, we ride in a strict (staggered abreast) formation that gives you room to manoeuvre, and keeps every rider in a predictable position.  Novices ride directly behind the group leader, so that they ride at the steady speed of the leader and this also has the benefit of them hardly being aware of the rest of the group.

The formation that we ride in is called 'staggered abreast'.   The leader rides in front on the RHS of the lane (closest to the centre line, so that he can easily monitor the group as a whole and can see the sweeper).  The next rider behind him is on the left side of the lane, about 1 second behind.  The third rider is 1 second behind the second one, but on the RHS again (and thus 2 seconds behind the leader).

This means that you are two seconds behind the bike directly in front of you, and there is no bike next to you, and the group as a whole is not too spread out.

There is no jostling and no need to worry about riding in a group.  Just hold your line as best you can (and even that is not critical because there are no bikes next to you).

Either way - do the 'Intro to Offroad' course and you will be good to go on tar or dirt or gravel driveways and parking lots, on your own or in a group.
