Camping spots near Rivers in Western Cape
I would like to camp on/near river banks in Cape Town surrounds, so that I can photograph birdlife in and around the water/dams. Preferrably not where there are thousand other campers! Would actually like to be alone. (My wife also likes grass!)
Any suggestions? Berg river, Klein River, Olifants River, Breede river etc. Maybe there are even farmers who would not mind letting one stay for a night or two on their private properties. Please pm me if you can suggest something!
(Was at Vloedbos near Caledon this week-end - and can recommend it. Visit the web site)
Thanks
Hi Johan,
Read my Trip Report for info on Citrusdal:

I can also recomend The Baths: http://www.thebaths.co.za/ try camping spot nr 15 and 16.
Enjoy,
Henk
Thanks for the suggestion Henk , I just booked nr 16 for the last weekend in FEB.....sounds great.
Rates R 80 pp and R 40 for kids
Thanks Henk - definitely on my list for the next time.
But keep them coming! I am reading!
You could try Palmeit River and Lagoon area by Kleinmond. I know there are camp sites there. Have never stayed there so dont know what the camp sites are like or the facilities. I do know that avoid it in school holidays and long weekends. If you go during the week you would probably have it all to yourself.
Kliprivierpark in Tulbagh is also nice, you can camp right on the river and there are some nice walks in the area. Out of season its reasonably quiet.
My wife also likes grass!
If it's grass you're after, I hear there's a place near Greyton - there ain't no river, and the lawn doesn't exist, but I'm told the quality of their grass is amazing!
You just have to look at all the rastas to see it works..

Thank you Andrew - I know Kleinmond and Palmiet. I wish somebody could tell me more about nice spots near Stanford - vry scarce on the internet.
Kliprivierpark sounds interesting - thanks
...and mr Stripes - you seems being smoked?? (No she likes green grass as in lawns)!:-)
Look at this website for interesting (budget) places to stay: www.budgetgetaways.co.za Or buy the book. It is very well written.
Thanks Johan - this looks like a site that will help a lot!

I also know of an awesome grazing point, just outside of Vredenburg, I think there is an couple of cows presently enjoying the grass, but if you guys hurry you could still get some leftovers.
I am gratefull for the responses - seems that even one's internet searching skills can be updated. Thank you Bella. I hope that other members would also being motivated to explore these sites.
A few years ago I went to Bonnivale and found out that in the whole of the town there was no camping spots available for a picnic but a lovely lady that worked at the info buro had a farm with a spot on it , not expecting much we went there and found a spot that is next to the river , surrounded by trees and has well maintainded lawn and she let lus use it for free , I would suggest phoning the information buro and ask about it and keep us posted because I would like to go for a weekend too
Silwerstrand near Robertson. Only out of season if you like it quiet.
Lebanon Citrus Farm near Clanwilliam - only about 10 camp sites. Private.
Thanks! will have a look
Kambati near swellendam is always a nice place. Awesome grassy campsites and a really nice river.

Kambati really looks like the kind of place I am looking for! But then not when all the others are there - it looks quite busy! Thanks, first time I heard of this place.
