removing the radiator

I need to take my radiator out (650 dakar) and have seen on the workshop manual that the bike should be on the centre stand - is this essential? If so - why? My bike only has a side stand. It seems fairly straight forward to do?

It's just easier

If the bike is on the sidestand you struggle to work on the lower side.  I'm not sure if you also have a problem with the fluid running out on the lower side when you disconnect the hoses.

For bikes without a centre-stand you can just plonk the sump-guard on a milk crate or something similar (hopefully stronger) of the right height.  You might need help to lift the bike onto whatever you choose.

it can be done on a sidestand.

it can be done on a sidestand.

I've done it a couple of times.

sure a centerstand would help, but it really isn't that difficult getting out - there is a knack in getting it back on with that grommet thing at the bottom.

If it still has those fancy clips beemer uses for the hoses, rather get yourself standard hoseclips to reassemble - I still haven't figured how one is supposed to get the original ones back on easily.

but, as charles say, just use a milk crate..
