RIP. First I heard of

RIP.

First I heard of this.

The Calvinia - Ceres road is well known for its sudden unexpected cross winds. I am not suggesting this is what happened but have a good friend from Calvinia who was blown right off that road and seriously injuring himself and destroying his bike!!!!!

accident on Gydo pass on Sun

Terrible news.

Someone asked me about an accident on the Gydo Pass on Sunday - they saw bikes and ambulances etc. Sounds like it could be the same incident?

Japie

Japie and Cilliers Burger attended the Great Kalahari Bike Challenge in Upington with us over the weekend. We rode in more or less the same same group on Saturday and had a great time together. I was devastated when Benton Wiehahn informed me that Japie had an accident on the way back. Heard later that he died. Never good news, especially when it gets this close.

Condolences to his loved ones.

This was a different group.  Rider on yellow 650GS came off and dislocated his shoulder.  Refused the ambulance and rode his bike to Ceres where he was treated.

Sad about Japie, R.I.P.

Japie Holtzhausen

Me and my wife Natasja arrived at the accident scene in the Tropmpsberg pass. Cilliers, his friend was riding in front. Japie followed him. There was a sharp left turn and Japie told Cilliers on the intercom that he did not see the bend as the sun blinded him. Next Cilliers heard was a yell and the accident.

When we arrived there someone already was on the way to get hold of an ambulance as there was no cell phone reception at the site of the accident. We stayed with him and talked to him and prayed for him. At the time the injuries did not look so severe from the outside but he had internal injuries. He was taken to Ceres medi clinic and later to Worcester medi clinic. Sadly he passed away early Monday morning. It feels as if I have lost my best friend..... I found out later that we have so many things in common. I was privileged to ride his GS 650 back to cape town. Nothing much wrong with the bike. Broken fearing, instrument panel, front mud guard, right indicators, bend steering and a few scratches.  I really didn't think that his injuries was so bad. Myself (Bernard Oosthuizen) and my wife Natasja prays that in this time God will be with his wife, two sons, family and friends and comfort all of you. We were fortunate to have met him, if it was for only about 30 minutes.... We will always remember Japie specially when we are riding on our GS. Japels, we know you are OK where you are now!
