Running costs
The implementation of the rapid bus system got me thinking what it costs to get to work each day, its rather expensive. These are my calculations; how close to the mark am i? Have i done my calculations correctly?
Over 30000km
Fuel based on 20km/l = R12 000-00
Servicing on avg cost of R1300 per service = R 3600-00
Tires, brakes, chain and sprockets = R 5500-00 (2 sets of tire, 1 chain and sprockets)
Cost of ownership over 30000km = R 21100-00
Cost per km, 70 cents
Daily commute = R 38 to work and back (27km one way)
This excludes insurance and incidentals ...
in comparison, my pal lives in London - he pays £27 one way!
As a matter of interest, would anyone like to share the costs of doing that by car?
tyre, chain, sprockets R5500??
I paid R1800 for Anakees front and back, and R1000 all in for sprockets and chain..
My calculations:
Distance monthly (just to work & back 22 days/month): 1540km.
Bike insurance/service/tyres/fuel (monthly): R1460. (cheaper cause I service my bike myself).
= 94c / km which I can halve as my wife & I work and therefore travel together,
= 47c / km.
Other factors to consider regarding the BRT:
1. Time. How much time do you save by travelling on your bike as opposed to waiting for the bus, travelling on the bus, etc.
2. Convenience. It's great to be able to pop out over lunch, or go to see a client, or stop for a beer on the way home.
3. Meditation. My riding time is my thinking/me/peace time.
4. And the most important for last, you get to ride your bike more!
