Sand riding course ( intro) offered by Rony: only R350
5 November 2009 - 12:38pm
Rony asked me to post this but please contact him directly ( his details are at the bottom ) and also feel free to post on this thread , for this great opportunity to lean how to master sand riding, or at least feel more comfortable doing it .
Rony is offering two introduction to sand courses, one on Wednesday the 11th November and one on Saturday 14th November , both from 09H00 to 15H00, opposite Zone 7 at Table View for only R350 .
This is a great opportunity for ladies ,or men who need more experience in sand , to learn to ride sand with skill and confidence. And as Rony is only taking 6 riders per course he can give his focused attention on each of the trainees.
Rony kindly took me for sand training there the week before CABS so I could practice riding sand before riding the orange route , which was vey sandy. I must say Rony’s training proved invaluable. The place is not deep sand like at Atlantis but has a layer of sand with plenty of interesting jumps and turns to practice. I found Rony to be such a gentle and kind teacher that I pushed my limits without realizing it . In fact after my first fall within the first few minutes I don’t recall falling much or at all until the end when I stopped . I realized that sand riding is really only a skill that one can acquire ,and Rony is vey good at imparting his knowledge. I also enjoyed the day , I did not feel pressurized to do anything faster than I was prepared to learnt it at and Rony was vey patient ! He did not mind in the least that I did the same little circular route over and over untill I got it right .
I felt that I got a good basic introduction to sand on a practical level so I wont forget it , now I just need someone to wave a magic wand so I can still my nerve long enough to actually ride the sand like it is supposed to be ridden ! and no we did not do any fast riding, in fact I was surprised at how slowly I rode. Fast riding apparantly only works on the long sandy straights, and one thing about Rony he does not make it too easy for the student so I had to do lots of sandy twists and turns and jumps , but so I also learnt more :)
I am sorry that I can’t do next week’s course again , as it was so good , but wish all those doing the course to have fun on the day . You won’t regret it .
Please contact Rony as below ,and feel free to post here.

Hi Arno
In my experience,
Hi Arno
In my experience, your best starting point is the 'Intro to Offroad' course offered by Rony or by CountryTrax. In the intro course you will learn slow riding through slalom cones. This inculcates proper body position and balance. These are the fundamental skills needed to ride on sand - get them right and sand riding becomes easy.
However, you can always do the sand course as a starting point, although you will battle on an 1150GS especially if you haven't mastered the basics.
Road riding cannot prepare you for off-road, and I often witness experienced road riders keeping their feet out in intersections and while lane-splitting, purely because they have not learnt proper control of a big bike.

Ok, so Rynet's post said at Zone 7 opposite Tableview.. that's not entirely helpful.
Would this be near Killarney?
I realise I deleted the PM without looking at it, but I don't understand why it is so difficult to tell me where the course is being held.
Is there a problem?

Rony says he had great
Rony says he had great success coming down Sani pass in the rain with '''his ABS on'''.
On the sand course we had lots of rain and mud, and it seems that 'stand up, look up, open up those legs' still holds. However, the watchword is definitely 'easy on the throttle ou beau'.

Charles I don't think Rony came down Sanie pass with his abs off. Think he used it on shorter downhills where there was a decent area to run off.
He used the ABS off to stop the front wheel from sliding out in-front of him.

This early in the morning
This early in the morning and julle is kla gerook ;-)
It was not Sani pass but days on end in the Transkei durring rainy season. here is my reply on the riding mud tread
'Quote"
Hi, riding in mud is not easy, its about the same as with sand but things happen much faster. Leave your abs on and then the front wheel does not break away as easily. You will be going very slowly anyway so you should be able to stop.
Pick a straight line as much as possible and riding in the rut is advisable as the “middle mannetjie” could be round and you will end up going sideways.
If the mud is sticky check the front wheel regularly for mud build up and getting blocked against the mudguard, remove with a stick or so and check regularly. When wheel get stuck it will slide forwards and you have no control over it and steering does not work.
Mud stays a beach and if one can avoid long distances in it do so.
