Speeding fines from the front
11 February 2009 - 9:54pm
Last weekend I retorted to Julie when she said I was driving too fast that I had never gotten a speeding fine. Well...
Today I got a fine, but the picture is of me from the front! How on earth?
Did they recognize me from the photo they got the week before from behind?
Did the traffic cop measure my speed from the front, then record my registration as I passed?
Not good I tell you...

Charles SORRY,I will donate R 10.00 towards it for FULL details...so that I may avoid one.:-)
On the bike I presume, where, when, lane, anything gleaned from it for future avoidance. (other than LISTEN to Julie):-)
Ps. All others reading this should pay Charles the same...school fees!:-)

Charles I know a friend
Charles I know a friend that was caught in this way.
They take the pic as you approach, with all the relevant requirements. Then as you pass they manaully write down your registration number.
If you want to contest it they will insist on seeing your bike - to compare with the photo for identification.
Now if somebody was to quickly swap out a pair of pink tappet covers that might make it difficult for them to prove that they got the correct number ....

This was on Edinburgh
This was on Edinburgh Drive, between Torquay and Sidmouth avenues, Claremont. Normal people know it as coming down from Wynberg hill, into Bishopscourt, on the Blue Route.
It is a 60 zone - I was doing 84. Unfortunately my speedo is in for repairs so I can't confirm or deny :).
It's me alright...
To think that as I spotted the traffic officer, I even gave a little friendly wave. What I should have done was manoeuvre myself around the car so that he could not read my number plate.
I in no way endorse speeding. What I do do is ride a bit faster than the traffic to make it easier to stay out of harms way. I may have confused the cars' braking at that point with accidental knocking of the brake pedal while applying makeup and SMSing. ;-)

Well, I could deny it was me by removing my plate. But what is the fine for a missing plate? Not to mention the cost of time spent in court etc.
Treat it as a safety tax...

The guy sits in plain view
The guy sits in plain view on the pavement during peak hour near the bottom of a long downhill.
He probably knows us all as we pass him every morning. When the time is right, he pounces. I bet the next time he won't even need to write down my registration - just look it up in his book!

Hi Charles,

Hi Charles,
I had one of those in October. I wrote a dispute letter asking all the obvious questions: How they new it was me, what proof etc.....
The reply I got was the log sheet for each offence that they caught on camera that day, on that spot. So it would seem that the static camera you still ok to get away with the head on shot, but the mobile unit the officer will still get your reg number and that log sheet holds up.
I took it to court and had to pay the R500 and for my efforts I lost my keys at the courts and that cost me R700 for the replacement key.... total cost:R1200.... bad karma I say...

Eisch I ride that road 4 to
Eisch I ride that road 4 to 5 times a day and often see that little errrr (ok it's a'family' forum) person sitting there! Most of the time I am doing about 80, will now be very careful of this, thanks for the heads up Charles.
Although I find it will be very difficult for them to prove it was you, I'm sorry but there must be hundreds of bikes on the road that look the same, only your helmet with the bike may be unique. If you say it's not you and present a different helmet they would more than likely have to drop the charge.....however that's also probably a day in court

From Wayne's post, if
From Wayne's post, if they
* have the picture with timestamp, and the
* log of the registration written down by the operator with timestamp
* and it turns out the registration the guy wrote down matches the bike in the picture, and
* you are the owner of that bike, and
* it turns out you look a lot like the guy in the picture, then
* chances are it was you.
R300 is a lot less than I can earn in a day, and a day at work is a lot more pleasant than a day in court. So, ''betaal boet!''

Do you s'pose he'd get irritated or just more zealous if everyone who passed that way wore a sign saying "too cowardly to go catch real criminals, eh!"

Charles go look at the "NC 09 - Mystery ride" TRIP REPORT.
I took a MUCH BETTER picture of your bike, even better angle, better lighting the works, AND I wont even charge you R300. :)
