I have 3 of those straps Neil made me and want to practice towing another motorcycle. What is the best/safest way to tow a motorcycle with another motorcycle? I recall that you never attach the straps to the motorcycle but just "loop" it over the foot pegs? And how long do you make the tow straps? Should I use all 3 of them?

Hi Corné, use all x3
Hi Corné, use all x3 straps. I have only been towed by a car, and used much longer straps, and yes the loop over the foot peg. When I towed that bike on the one club ride I also had longer strap of 25mm webbing, but it was a smaller bike. Towing: FRONT Bike over RHS foot peg, and the REAR bike over the LHS footpeg, and ride staggered...the rear bike to the Right of the front bike. The important things are to keep the straps away from the foot brake and the wheels..(obviously!!!:-))

Corné I have put in a call
Corné I have put in a call to Andyman just to check that the info I have given re: which peg and bike is correct so please recheck this thread before going ahead....try on grass if you can...but it really is easy.... the rear bike does the braking to keep straps taught and gently pick up the speed.

Will do... I agree finding a grass patch is better :-) Towing motorcycle to motorcycle is huge trust thing and certainly something to practice... We are planning a 3 bike "Outback" trip (no backup car) and you never know when you need to tow on of the bikes... I will wait for Andyman to give input on this.... You know I still remember his talk at one of the club meetings when he showed what you can do with these straps! Awesome stuff!!

Towing is also useful for
Towing is also useful for bump-starting a bike with battery problems (ask Andyman ;-) But South Africans, please note that it is illegal to tow a bike on public roads. As in, for e.g., towing a bike that won't start to the dealer. Obviously, for recovery in the Tankwa Karoo with its lack of speed cops it is a different matter... I've been playing with
I've been playing with towing a bit. The rider in front has the line over his/her right footpeg and the towed bike on the left. This keeps the line away from the gearlever on the front bike and leaves the rear bike with a free brake lever. (The rear bike does the braking). If the rear bike needs to break away he/she can just peel off to the right and the strap should drop off. Be careful on grass. We tried it and you can end up with a fairly violent slide sideways when pulling away if you're not 100% straight. Andy has more experience and may be able to add to this. I do nor have much to add,
I do nor have much to add, it's all been said quite well. Rear bike is the brakes, keep speed to a very manageble level. Do not chase. I've towed a 1200 GSA over 40km of Rough ground and un-maintained gravel roads and the only two comments that stood out from this are: 1) The rear bike feels the speed a lot more than the towing bike due to proximity. 2) turning to left needs to be planned in advance so you can make as wide a turn as to keep the tow-strap from fouling the rear wheel. On Knobblies the rear wheel can foul quick and jerk the towed bike severely. With duals or road tyres this problem is almost non existent. Have patience towing. lots of it. Andyman Yup that's me. And who else here can say

And who else here can say that he has towed Andyman himself? In rush hour traffic? In the dark? And rain?

Edit: Oh - and all that while I had a pillion!

Yes, I can. Cool
