Trials Bike
This is the year that I start riding a trials bike. Does anybody know of any second-hand bikes?
Tonight I am looking at two Beta rev3 250cc models, (a 2000 and a 2006). Does anyone have any advice about these?
No advice but they certainly are great bikes to have fun with and learn a lot at the same time.
Many many years ago I spent an afternoon playing on one of these bikes and it was ton's of fun.
Good luck Charles.
That this is the year you start riding trails bike............................
I am almost sure CPR had one for sale, check with them, also Jason at CPR is involved with the trails scene so may be able to help.
Got permission and budget 'cos I was such a good boy last year and father Xmas didn't get me anything!
Part of the plan is that she can tag along and play on the 230 while I practise on the trial bike, or vice versa.
Email me Jason's details please.
The trials folks are great people. I did trials the trials circuit for several years on a Bultaco 350 Sherpa during the early to mid seventies, two things are for sure, teaches you balance on every conceivable surface and throttle control, tremendous fun.
Pop in to Rock Garden in Diep River and talk to the guys there. They sell trials bikes.

My new baby.
Went for a short ride when I got her home this afternoon. 2-stroke is very different to what I am used to, and I am too light for the kick-start! I did manage to pop some wheelies, including one right over - but the bike is light enough for me to hop off and swing around.
Congratulations....and enjoy!
Ai ai ai, will Charles never grow up, or act his age....?
Best wishes for 2012, and enjoy her!
As they say, growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional
True to form, this morning while riding near the river, I (you see where this is heading don't you?) popped a big wheelie, lost a bit of control, and managed to jump off the bike into the river ahead of it to stop it falling in the water. Boots wet, but bike on its side down the bank with front wheel inches from the water, back wheel in the air and engine running.
After killing the engine I had to clamber up the bank and pull the bike up out of harms way. Lucky Julie was not there or I would have had an earful! She especially hates it when I get a new bike and within hours drop it into the river.
So far that has happened to me with all 3 of my bikes: Mr.Badger, Bettsy 230F and Beta. While my tale relates of heroically jumping into the water to save the bike by the skin of my teeth, the story amongst the bikes in the garage is more along the lines of how they chucked me in the river and laughed while I struggled...
Enjoy Charles! Also would be looking at one in the future! Cost of the beta?
BTW you should first have practised on a trials bicycle! My son's bike was for sale a couple of months ago!
Nothing like pedal power to keep you honest!
I paid 22k for the bike. I could not possibly ride a bicycle before the trials bike - I am steadily working my way downwards from Adventure Bike to walking, and a bicycle now would have been out of sequence!
Congratulations Charles, may you and the family have years of fun, that bike will amaze you. The bike seems to be in very good condition and @ R22K is a good price. Who did you buy the bike from? Well I must say, You do have your priorities right, yourself as the buffer between the ground and bike, good boy.
I went to an informal trials session at Bonthuys farm on Saturday. Turns out the organizer (a Xander whose phone number I had been given), is none other than Alex van Aswegen, who was a member of our club and who did the West Coast trip with his wife Linda as pillion when I did my first one in 2007.
And who else was there? Our old instructor Lourens van Rensburg! Alex's brother was the only other novice there. Alex and Lourens took us up the mountain and back again, and we did a few 'sections'. After 3 hours of riding I was well and truly poked. Ended with a braai - what a civilized sport this is.
Because speeds are low and the bike is light, we can ride in t-shirts, open-face helmets and light boots. Great for our hot summers. And because you have no seat, your core and legs get a good workout! I would recommend these for lady riders rather than the much heavier dirtbikes (72kg vs 120kg). I even learned how to put the bike on - and off - the bakkie on my own without a ramp.
I see in the Red Bulletin that Marc Coma does 2.5 hours of trials riding as part of his training every week. Makes you think, doesn't it?
