Hi, calling all GS riders in Cape Town

Do you live in or around Cape Town, like to ride offroad but don't have the time to do major out-of-town dirt rides? Done some offroad training but not getting enough time in the saddle in the dirt to keep your skills current?

Well do you realise that there are many spots in and around Cape Town to experience some dirt/technical riding?

I love jumping on my bike usually on a Sunday and doing my round-the-mountain trip, ATGATT of course, and stopping off at some fun and sometimes challenging spots. E.g. at the bottom end of Hout Bay, just before Mariner's Wharf where the police station used to be, is a large gravel parking lot with a massive dune encroaching on it. Here I will practise elephant turns, power slides and usually manage to get to the top of the dune even though this is the ass end of the beach dunes and therefore the finest of fine sand which makes the 5m odd height challenging.

I'm not trying to impress you with my "skillz" or scare you off. This is only one of many examples of spots requiring many varied skill levels.

I've created a custom Google Map (click here) listing the spots I've discovered so far.  I've added placemarkers and routes with notes.

All of these spots are "legal", as far as I know. The only dubious spot is the route past the Noordhoek wetlands - it's definitely NOT cool to enter the wetlands and you'll get serious attitude from the horse riders if you even look like you're contemplating it. Here I've placed a red marker to indicate that it's out of bounds.

For now, I've restricted editing of the map to myself and people I specifically invite to collaborate - but anybody is welcome to help add to the map, just PM/email me and send me your email address then I'll add you as a collaborator on the map. I think you'll need to have a Google Account (sign up here if you don't).

If anybody's keen to join me on one of these circuits, send me your cell number and I'll let you know when it's happening. This is not meant to be a formal Thing, just  a means of sharing interesting spots and having fun in the urban environment. You can be out and home again in 2 hours and have had your adrenaline fix for the week!

More spots wanted!

I've now got a few guys who're keen to explore these spots with me. Just for the record: I'm not a ride leader and these are not official rides of any sort. I let you know; I ride; you ride along on your own risk and using your own sound judgment.

That said, one of my main motivations in starting this is to find out about interesting and fun new spots so please send them along! Even if you don't want to collaborate on any map-building or come along on any rides: you can still send some suggestions of good technical spots around the Peninsula - or even ones further afield - even if it's just a text description of where the spot is and what we might find there.

Eventually we might be able to stitch these points together into a fun Urban Enduro route ...
