Where to source parts from overseas?

After having a minor heart attack at BMW, after enquiring about handguards, I thought I would ask if anyone has sourced parts from overseas...? If so, where did you get the parts, and were they cheaper?

For new BMW parts, I doubt you're going to get away much cheaper after shipping & duties, but who knows, maybe someone else has had luck.

For 2nd hand try www.beemerboneyard.com, or ACME Motor Salvage in Jhb.

Germany

I get a lot of stuff from Germany. The offer in Germany is huge with the likes of Polo, Hein Gericke, Louis having sometimes 2-3 retail stores in one city, as well as online ordering.
Clothing is also excellent and a lot seems to be much more inexpensive!
Most online shops offer a bike database and link this to their online offer - so when you put in your bike model you will see what parts they offer for that model.

I usually order online and have it sent to friends who will then bring with them when they come to SA (they love me for that, especially if it is this 2kg centre stand and the padded jacket with back protector), or I bring it with myself when I go overseas. Otherwise, the stores seem to be also offering shipment to SA, and one should get the German VAT back (19%!!):
Louis: When shipment is received in countries outside the EU, the relevant VAT for that country will have to be paid. In this case please send the invoice with the original customs stamp to our accounts department. On receipt of this declaration, that goods have been sent abroad, we can then refund you our standard VAT rate to one of your accounts (for ex. credit card)
