Women's off-road training day Sun 30 October
Hi ladies - let's get dirty
The BMW Club Cape is organising two off-road training & practise days for women, using your own bike.
Your instructor for the day will be John Carr, a qualified BMW instructor. John is passionate about bikes and biking – some of you may have been lucky enough to have had John as an instructor for the Killarney Track Days; off-road he is one of a kind.
The training sessions will take place on a farm near Stellenbosch, about 4 km from Donford Motorrad. Sessions will be small with around 10 participants per session, and will be very relaxed, with loads of time spent on explaining the exercises and the principles behind the exercises. Start time is at 09h00, with a few breaks to recap and for refreshment. You’ll finish around 17h00.
Level 1 is aimed at basic off-road riding. This is for women who would like to brush up on their off-road skills, who are new to off-road riding, and/or who have little or no off-road experience. If you have already done a few off-road courses and are comfortable on gravel, rather book for Level 2 (it includes an overview of Level 1 as well).
LEVEL 1
1) Bike adjustment
2) Rider position for off-road riding
3) Off-road steering and how to position your body
4) How to get your bike on and off the main stand
5) Various balancing exercises
6) How to pick up your bike
7) ”Walking” your bike and finding the balancing point
8) Various balancing & clutch control exercises
9) Riding in a circle – where to look, how to counterbalance etc
10) Riding figures of 8, u-turns and cones
11) Short climbs
12) Short descents
13) Riding without ABS
14) Emergency stops
Level 2 starts going into suspension settings, tyre pressures and the more technical aspects of the both bike and riding.
LEVEL 2
1) A quick overview of Level 1
2) Introduction to sand riding
3) Changing lanes on 2 tracks (showing ‘middelmannetjies’ who is boss!)
4) Advanced emergency braking
5) Riding between parallel logs
6) And more!
Cost:
R200 per person per
course/day, which excludes your lunch (the group will ride to a nearby cafe/restaurant; everyone pays for her own lunch)
Dates:
Sunday 11 September Level 1/Intro: DONE
Sunday 25 September Level 2/Intermediate: POSTPONED TO SUNDAY 30 OCTOBER
Cheers!
Anne & Karin

Thanks again, Annie, for organising another successful event for us girls!! Our instructors were the very knowledgable John Carr and Arno Rossouw.
Baie dankie vir die rustige manier waarop die dag verloop het sonder enige stres....elkeen binne sy eie vermoë. Back to Basics is die wagwoord en so "bond" ons met ons "dream machines".......figure 8's, emergency stops (with &without ABS), balancing, how to pick-up your bike, oops breaking a nail, finding the sweet spot, putting the bike on the main stand, aah another nail, walking the bike and watching our instructors that make everything look so easy.
Dankie vir jul geduld and behulpsaamheid. Weet net ons girls waardeer jul tyd, kennis en opoffenings....al vorder ons met baba treëtjies, we also get there and love every moment of it. We're having fun!!!
Well, my third time on Level 1 and one would think - what could she learn. I learnt a lot, including that I need to practice my tight turns and ignore those cones. I've never walked my bike anywhere (leading) - someone's always done it for me. And a million other things.
Some pics of the day from my cellphone (one day I will get a nice camera). Hopefully there are more pics from other cameras.
Just tell me how?: You want me to pick it up?
Now Karen has only been riding 6 times inclusive of Sunday on her bike.
Just look:
a-FIVE - yeeehaaa!!: I can't believe!!
Having shown us how to pick our bikes up was an important step before learning to "lead" the bike. Most of us had to pick our bikes up again a few times during this exercise.
What, must I take my bike for a walk?: Me? All by myself?
I See!: And where did you say we can use this technique?
I never knew I had legs until now....
Oh, Lunch!! We beetled back to Stellenbosch and went shopping for lunch at Woolies, which we then quickly wolfed down at Donfords. Not wanting to waste a moment, we hurried back to the farm to get on with the next lot of exercises:
The next few exercises had us all on our bikes doing u-turns inside cones and then figure-of-8s. Well, I did a good figure-of-8 in Courier Font! And we got to pick up our bikes some more... I didn't realise my peripheral vision was so good at spotting cones when I was trying to ignore them. Arno tried to distract me, but once I'd locked on, then I did a beautiful 8 in Brush Script!
Thanks to John, Arno and ALL the wonderful ladies for a fantastic day!
More photos please.
Wow, Thanks Annie for the fantastic photo's. You did well to capture the essence of the day. The setting was relaxed the students enthusiastic and the instructor awesome!!!
Thank you very much for organising a really wonderful day.
There is good news and bad news:
The bad news is that the women’s Level 2 (intermediate) off-road training day has been postponed to Sunday 30 October. The good news is that you now have a bit of time to practice a few cones and get even more comfortable on gravel!
John Carr, our instructor for the day, has requested some time so that he can build a suitable Intermediate-level course on the farm – a few obstacles; a small log or two, a little sand pit, and so on - all the sort of things you are likely to encounter on a regular intermediate-level outride; nothing too hectic.
We are still keeping the number of participants limited to 6-10 riders, so please (a) email or send a private message to either Anne or myself to say whether you must be kept on the list for 30 October, and (b) please pay the R200 as soon as possible to secure your place.
To recap the intermediate level training:
- Brief overview of Level 1 (intro to off-road riding)
- Intro to sand & different terrain
- Changing tracks on a two-track road (dealing with ‘middelmannetjies’)
- Advanced emergency braking
- Small obstacles, riding between parallel logs, and the like
As was the case with the intro to off-road riding training day, you will not be required to do any exercises you are uncomfortable with, although the idea is to push your comfort zones a little bit, and there will be lots of opportunity to ask questions. Being an intermediate level day, you’ll be expected to already be comfortable on your bike; be fairly comfortable on gravel and have done a few off-road rides; have an idea of how to ride cones and figures-of-eight; have practiced emergency braking a few times; and preferably have done one or more ‘intro to off-road’ riding courses.
Lunch will be for your own account. Closer to the time, an email will follow with details of the day. As soon as your payment is reflected in the Club’s bank account, the forum will be updated to reflecet “PAID” next to your name & then you know you are confirmed for 30 Oct!

Hi Anne and Karin
Put my name down as well please - can I pay closer to the time (one week before?) - I might have to work on the day so get back to me if it gets too full and I'll look at the schedule.
I'll try my best to be there and have diarised it as such.
Regards
Karin
Hi Karin,
Please sign me up for the training on the 30th...
Thank you,
Jeanne
Charmaine definately looked more lady-like walking her bike than what I did panting and heaving at 175kgs!!
Thanks to all for a great day! Lots were learnt and I feel much more comfortable on my bike than ever before.
